Andy Katz- Iowa and Fran McCaffery

He's a winner. But this is an intriguing situation for someone like McCaffery. There always seems to be the assumption that you have to go where the money and the league says you should. But do you?

I've covered the game for 20 years now, and I've seen plenty of questionable moves. The most recognizable ones came out of Butler. Few coaches have realized just how good a gig they've had in Indianapolis. Todd Lickliter left for Iowa and was fired three years later. Lickliter believed he could turn the Hawkeyes around. Barry Collier left for Nebraska. He was fired and ended up back at Butler as the athletic director.

McCaffery has to be careful here. He must make the right decision at a critical point in his career. Does also he look at Iowa, where he could be a fit since he was at Notre Dame and knows the Midwest?

Just more running off at the mouth from Katz, IMO. He keeps yammering about McCaffrey because he thinks he's doing the guy a favor.

Fran should stay where he is. I can't think of a single reason why that kind of hire would energize this program.

Katz is a Hawkeye Hater what the he'll would he know about the University, or even the state of Iowa for that matter. Hell he's probably never ever been here before

The dude can obvioulsy coach. He took Sienna to the tournament 2 years and beat OSU last year.

So what!? Look at the conference he coaches in. Not even close to the big ten. We need a coach who can recruit and win consistently against Bo Ryan, Matt Painter, Tom Izzo, Thad Matta, etc. We need a big name from a big conference. How can so many people NOT understand this??

It's easy to understand but unfortunately its not easy to make happen. 10-22. losses to UT-SA and Duquesne. low attendance. How can you not understand that?

Let's run down the list of coaches you mentioned and where they were at before their current gigs...
Tom Izzo - Northern Michigan
Bo Ryan - UW Milwaukee
Matt Painter - Southern Illinois
Thad Matta - Xavier

Matta's the only one from what might be considered a 'name' school. Even then, Xavier isn't in a major conference. The four most successful programs in the Big 10 didn't get a big name coach from a big conference when they last made coaching moves. Something to keep in mind.

And you can add Bruce Weber - Southern Illinois to that list too, but Iowa is much too good for a mid major coach according to some people on here. All those schools were better opening than Iowa is now, and they all went the mid major route, there are lots of good mid major coaches out there that could do a great job at Iowa, but everyone here wants to hire a big name that will make a huge "splash", well that's probably not going to happen.
