Ames Trib: Hoiberg told Diallo he couldn't guarantee return for 2015-16

Haha apparently pretty much every player, ISU hasn't landed a high school recruit who doesn't have a mental illness for two years now, they can't land transfers anymore unless they are related to former players, even scrubs from a bad Michigan team aren't going there. This is most definitely not helping their recruiting. Fred is gone, on to bigger and better things, ISU was a good stepping stone for him.

It's pretty incredible what Fred has been able to accomplish considering all of this...

Also, I didn't know Custer and Tslampouris had mental issues.

I completely disagree. If Fred truly wants to be an NBA coach, he'll probably never find a situation better than the one he'd walk into in Chicago. Most new coaches walk into a disaster. He'd be joining a competitive team in a weak conference, and a front office/ownership group he knows and is comfortable with. I think he's gone for sure.

If Fred goes to Chicago, I think it could very well be a disaster for Chicago.

Yeah it could be. I think he's got more going for him than the last few college coaches who dipped their toe in the NBA. Calipari and Pitino didn't have previous NBA experience, nor did they play there. Plus they have the system rigged so they can recruit their way to success in college. That doesn't apply to Hoiberg because he certainly didn't have the system rigged in his favor and honestly, I don't think he likes recruiting. Plus, he is pretty good at managing egos.

What? Pitino was an NBA coach before he went back to college to coach Kentucky. He did pretty decent with the Knicks, much better than he did with Boston.

Forgot about that couple years back in the 80's. Just remember him being a whiny ***** with the Celtics. Either way, guys like Pitino and Calipari don't handle not being the center of attention well. They are definitely college guys.

THIS

Although, the Mayor of Ames can't recruit the Hawkeye state, I can't see him rolling the Dice on
the Bulls.

Just my opinion. But, emotionally, I couldn't give a ****

I wouldnt really consider it rolling the dice. The bulls are one of the top teams in the NBA right now and had a string of injuries that crippled them this year and last year.

Fred said it was a lifelong dream of his to coach in the NBA, he's close with the Bulls front office, he played for the Bulls, etc. I'd say if he is offered the Bulls job and doesn't take it he would be pretty foolish.

How do you figure this is positively affecting his recruiting? If Bielfeldt wants to commit to ISU but isn't doing so because Hoiberg is trying to parlay this media attention into a raise, that isn't a good thing. I don't see how a player delaying his commitment to said school is ever a good thing. If he's got potential recruits hanging in the balance of whether or not he is going to be the coach at ISU, he better clear the air ASAP so they don't do exactly what Diallo did.

Doesn't really matter though because he's going to Chicago.

it's not negative, because the recruit is waiting. that was your basis that it was negative.

positive - hoiburger getting a bunch of national press for being an nba caliber coach - what kid wouldn't to have a coach like that? i see that as a positive for him if he stays.

lol this such a stupid take

Bulls aren't that good of job, their ceiling is conference finals if everything breaks just right and their an old team with a ton of miles on them, only downhill from here.

Hoiberg is making one big buns mistake. He had ames sown up till he wore Depends.

Freddie is not leaving L'Ames. It is free marketing, by simply keeping your mouth shut. Sound familiar Hawkeye fans? Remember 2002 thru about 2011 with the constant Kirk to the NFL? KF could have did much better on the recruiting front, but he didn't have to do much to get recruits to at least listen... He does have a ton of players that went to the NFL...

The choirboy aint going anywhere. By not saying a word, everyone talks. His recruiting will be much easier. What player wouldn't want to play for a coach wanted by the pros? Especially in basketball.

This really isn't close to the same thing.. Ferentz did get some looks but the level of serious interest and pursuit on both sides was never close to this.

Everyone knows that Hoiberg wanted to be an NBA coach... Ferentz never seemed to really want the NFL.

The best part of all of this is Fred didn't even care what NBA job he got, he just wanted to get the **** out of Ames haha. He was even willing to take the Magic job.

Doesn't surprise me if he leaves ISU.

Fred Hoiberg takes the Bulls job. However, in three years, after struggling with an aging roster, he is let go.

Meanwhile Fran McCaffery takes the Iowa Hawkeyes to the Final 4. Suitors come, asking him for his services and he ends up taking his dream job at Whatever State.

Fred, wanting to get back into the college game, and wanting to get back as close to Ames as possible, accepts the job to be the new Iowa Hawkeye coach in 2018.

Don't laugh, bro, it could happen.

Even if that were not the case; which it is, the Bulls current roster isn't constructed for what FH wants to do. Assuming Butler sticks around long term you are going to have to surround him and Rose with shooters. Dunleavy won't be enough and you still do not know what you have in McDermott.

It would not shock me if FH becomes the ISU AD in 5 to 10 years. Because of health issues I do not think he is in it long term. He isn't Mike Brown or Vinny Del Negro where he will be recycled 20 times. He will either be back in a NBA front office or he will be running the Iowa St. athletic dept.

i'm guessing that was for Bulls negotiation only. Same with the T'Wolves job jumping into the equation - he was simply negotiating with the Bulls.
