Amazing recruiting story of Brandon Smirh

There's a highlight video out there. Kid looks big, fast, nimble and tough. Anxious to see him play.

Welcome to the Hawks, Brandon! He has great size and sounds like great speed is in his blood with his parents and sister all track stars at one point. If he has the hands to go along with his size and speed he could really shine here. We all know there is plenty of opportunity to make his mark in our receiving corps.

Watched his highlights, think we got a good one here. Obviously they were only his highlights but man his fellow teammates at wr sure did a lot of standing around watching, giving Smith no help. Brandon just keeps catching them while not even open and breaks takles consistently.

Chances are 1 or 2 of our receiver recruits will be at least as good as Martin and the regret for not landing him will fade away. Sounds like Smith has a good chance to be one of those guys.

"He looks like they are supposed to look" I'd say that type of first impression didn't hurt haha. How a kid like that can slip through the recruiting fingers of the SEC is beyond me. I'd blame his HS coach unless he was being ignored. The HS coaches typically are who send the highlight videos out to the programs to check out. But that said if he's from as remote of a small town as he is this he may not have the contacts. It's all about relationships. He could have sent them to programs and recruiting coordinators to have them ignored too. I'd be interested to know how all that went down. It's pretty crazy for Bell to stumble upon him like that and for it to work out. Bell needs to buy his coaching buddies meals every time he goes to visit his mom now that's for sure.

What a neat story. How do guys like this fall thru the recruiting cracks? A 5A school out of 6A.

The kid isn't on social media, didn't go to any camps, his school sounds like it's literally in the middle of a cotton field. Sounds pretty similar to how we found Brad Banks....and that worked out pretty well for all parties involved! :)

He went to two camps. I believe one was Alabama from reading the article.

Seriously. There has to be more to the story of how he stayed off the radar. If good prospects can't hide in Iowa, they can't hide in Alabama either. "25 miles away from civilization" describes most of both states.

Good prospects hide all the time. Josey was going to Luther and now he's a Butkus Finalist and a sure fire NFL draft pick. Brad Banks used to chase rabbits thru sugar cane fields and no one (including us) knew about him until Aiken stumbled on him scouting someone else. Brandon Myers was going to UNI until we came in late and he's spent however many years in the NFL. Guys sometimes just don't get noticed....

Yup it's crazy. Sometimes words like random & luck are all that need to be said... He started to get offers after he'd committed to Iowa. But like article said he didn't publicly plaster them out there so who's to know for sure who all was after him. He just didn't care and shut down his recruitment. Unlike a lot of other kids...

I think I like this kid. A lot! Great story.

I especially like how he made a commitment and didn't waver when the SEC schools came calling. He didn't boast on twitter every time he got interest from a school. Sounds mature. An Iowa kind of kid.

Oh, and looks like a helluva baller too!

He certainly passes the eye test. I like the comparison one of the coaches made to Mo Brown. That guy was BIG....6'2' and 215. Smith is already 6'3" and 205. If we got another Mo Brown, that'd be awesome....

Love the story.

A large percentage of these young men fall back to who showed them "respect" first.

Others are who gives the most love.
And Others are who is the sexiest school.

Not a knock. An observation.
