If you watch the play, the ball comes out of a crowd of people right to him at waist level. Not quite as dramatic as Tyler Sash's famous trick or treat special but that ball was pinballng around. It was in his hands before he could think about knocking it down.

It wouldn't have hurt to knock it down but there were bodies in the area. What if bounces of a helmet or shoulder pad and right to an offensive player?

He did have the presence of mind to go down rignt away and could have gone out of bounds if needed.
