Alford being mentioned re: Mizzou job

Couldn't disagree more. Now Pierre Pierce is the fall guy for Alford? Sure people were disappointed, embrassed, etc., but Alford was the reason people turned away from Iowa hoops. Most programs are going to have unpleasant situations arise, but that is part of coaching. In case you don't remember, a lot of folks wanted him back on the court after the first incident because of the impact he had on the team.

You misread me. I meant it was the way Alford handled the PP thing. And you may not remember, but there were more people unhappy about the way he handled that situation than wanted Pierce back on the court. Were you at Iowa at the time? It was a serious issue that seriously fractured the fan base.

If Alford wouldn't have come out with his knee-jerk support statement directly after the incident, his negative ratings would not have been so high. Of course there is the arrogance and personal moral issues as well. But the handling of the PP situation was the point of crystallization for all of it.

I am pretty sure we asked for a restraining order of 1500 miles. Did you know the term "Alford Plea" originated here---he knows that there is proof he ruined Iowa basketball but will not admit it.

So the lowest attendance for Mr. Davis was 13,963 (last year). Prior to that carver was routinely above 15k people. Attendance went up around 1,200 people (from Dr Toms last year ONLY) during alfords first 3 yrs. But it was never higher than the peak yrs of Mr. Davis iirc. After a 3 yr charade it quickly plummeted to record lows and continued to slide until this year.

Check the stats. Attendence started slipping in Dr.Toms last few years.
Then it went up the first 3-4 years under SA...then started slipping again.
And yes, when Carver was sold out for the season under SA,it did not exceed years that it was sold out under Mr. Davis....so it was never higher than the peak years under Mr. Davis...it was equal...obviously,you cannot exceed ''sold out''.

Are we actually arguing about attendance? I mean, the stats are right there for everyone to see...I am not defending SA or excoriating Mr. Davis, just trying to keep factual information relevant in a discussion. There is no debate about attendance figures. They are what they are. Hopefully, they are headed upwards as they started to this year. Again,no debate about the crash in attendance under lick...it was clearly the all time low.

Don't fool yourselves! The attendance decline started during Davis' tenure. When Davis took over the Iowa program, basketball was sold out on a season ticket basis. To get tickets you had to donate money. In fact, there were many long-time boosters who could only get partial season tickets.

The decline in the basketball program started under Davis, continued with Alford & hit rock bottom under Lickliter.

You can connect the Iowa basketball attendance drop-off during the SA years directly to the PP issue. And I, for one, actually appreciate the fans for that. Nice to see fans actually take a stand on an issue as significant as that.

I think it's also important to note that the first Pierce incident took place right after one of the most horribly disappointing seasons in Hawkeye Hoops history - it was Recker & Evans senior season when the team was Top-10 preseason, and ended up winning just 5 conference games and a first round NIT loss. We can only speculate, but I'm betting attendance would have gone down after that season regardless of Pierre Pierce. That only made things worse.

Just because it was before my time...what was the capacity of the field house?

I actually applauded afford after the first incident because he stood by his player when it would've been easy to turn your back on him. afford was a good person to his players. but he didn't bring his best image to the program.

The plot thickens... Alford gets a lil testy with the local newspaper:

MU talked to Tubby; Alford denies contact

No,he did not get testy. Read the article; the reporter texted him asking if he had talked to Mo,and he said no.
The reporter re-texted him saying that three anonymous coaches said that SA had accepted the Mo job....so SA texted back that he was at the game with his son,and he can not help what other coaches said, and he had not talked with Mo.

That is testy? This is typical of those folks who hated SA at Iowa...he would say anything, and it became a cause celeb...and if he said nothing the was an aloof *****. He is no saint, but fans invent crap about him,and that is sad.

Easy there officer. I admit I could have worded my post a little differently to appease the "tone of message board post police" such as yourself, but I vow to abide by your personal rules next time JHH.

JHHawk,

I didn't realize how sensitive you were about Steve. Anyway, Missouri hired away Miami's Frank Haith. I hope my tone is to your satisfaction; take care buddy! ;)

Sources: Miami's Frank Haith agrees to coach Missouri - ESPN

Ok, I probably went over the line a bit there. No biggie. Not a huge defender of SA...just believe in fair play. Haith is a surprise hire for Missouri....sounds like Mizzou fans are in full metal meltdown....better them than us.

I never said he took the job, I never said he was looking at the job. I was contradicting your statement that you where not a huge defender of Alf. I submit your body of work on that other site to refute your statement.
