Alaric Jackson, Chauncey Golston

Hopefully that's good news and they're both coming back to lead us to great things next season!

Thanks for the update. If that ends up being the case that’s great. A lot of people were very concerned about the offensive line but Alaric returning would be huge (pun intended).

Golston is a stud as well and is versatile. Strong against the run and can rush the passer a little bit. Can play inside on our pass rushing package.

Golston strikes me as the kind of guy whose draft stock can rise immensely in a year with more film and stat padding. Same with Jackson. You play one good year at starter at LT for Iowa and you have a really decent shot at going in the first round so long as your combine performance checks out. I think a guy like Jackson will increase his payday by several million dollars by staying.

Golston translates to a 4-3 defensive tackle in the NFL. Will be asked to put on weight. I think he could really excel at that position.

I agree. The one thing with Golston that would give me pause if I was him is that he’s going to get a ton more attention from offensives without AJE.

I actually feel kind of bad for Golston because of his versatility he’s put on the inside in our pass rushing package. It’s much tougher to get sacks in there. I’d speculate that probably cost him 2-4 sacks throughout a season, which is pretty big for his draft status. Looking at his stats he only had 2.5 sacks his year so coming back to have a big senior year would make sense. I think he could be a 3rd/4th round type pick.

Hopefully Jackson stays injury free and the performance on the field is elevated and goes from good to great. I am sure Petras likes the idea of an experience dude protecting his backside.

I am not sure how much Golston actually weighs but maybe he wants to or think he needs to add 10+ more pounds, some more strength, and work on his explosive first two steps.

I do not pretend to be an expert, but I think Wirfs and Epenesa will have a better idea on where they would fall in the NFL draft after it is known which and how many underclassmen around the country have declared for the NFL. If either would be predicted to fall out of the first round I think they finish up their senior year. Right now I think the pending draft is going to be filled with so many underclassmen it will pay to wait another year.

Not to mention the fact that Jackson's heir apparent will have another year to groom and grow.

this just means they haven’t yet correct? The deadline isn’t until January (to declare I mean)

I don’t know what the deadline is to submit the paperwork for an nfl draft advisory board review. The other three Iowa juniors submitted their papers right after the regular season. The deadline to declare for the draft is January.

Similar to basketball, I don't see the harm in filling out the paperwork. thats why I'm pretty shocked that those guys haven't yet. and sorta thinking they just haven't gotten to it yet. When has honest feedback ever been a bad thing?

I think they both can heavily increase their draft stock with another year. Geno as well. Wirfs and Eppy project top 15. Hard to move up much.

I wonder how Jackson will grade out. No offense to Jackson as I am glad he is on our team, but I still really haven't seen him play to the hype that has surrounded him. I dont know if it is me and I dont know what I am looking at or if it is because of his size, but to me it looks like he gets beat fairly often, our run game sucks and I dont ever remember watching or hearing about him dominating a defensive player.

I wonder if Gholston wants to use another year to get better physically and mentally and not be in AJs shadow. He could really boost his draft stock with a great year.

I think Wirfs will move up a few spots on many teams draft board with his performance at the combine. He strength numbers are unreal. He also has a look about him. If you take AJ and TW for example. They are roughly the same height and weight, but Wirfs just looks Much stronger and is.

With Epenesa we're looking at a top 10 defense next year. Epenesa still is a first rounder and Golston is a 2nd or 3rd rounder. A fan can dream.
