Al Lorenzon vs Adam Woodbury.

I'm class of 84, so therefore I played against the Vanilla Gorilla. Who do you think will have more of an impact as a highly recruited center. Al averaged 7 pts a game over his Hawkeye career. His playing time got less over his 4 years. (back problems) How will Woodbury compare??

Better.

Totally different players. Al was a power forward. He also played on teams that were among the best in the last 50 years.

Lorenzen was 6'8"or 9, Woodbury is said to be 7'1". Can you say apples vs oranges, PF v C? I certainly at least expect Woodbury to have more impact than any 'true center' since AC Earl and he appears to have more upside than any in memory. Here's to fulfilling potential.

If he's on a team as good as the ones Lorenzen was on I'll care more about that then if he becomes the next Raef Lafrentz or Al Lorenzen. If this team can gel early and not slip up in non conference games maybe NCAA tourny isn't out of the question.

I loved the Vanilla Gorilla. I remember watching him in the McDonalds AA game. He owned the middle. Nobody went near him. He was very good rebounder and defender.
In the Oklahoma game at the Kingdome, Mr. Davis's first year. I remember him waiting for someone to shoot a free throw. The shot was missed and Al had the rebound and the Sooners who had been on each side of him were on the floor, just like that....

I think Woody will be better offensively, probably block more shots, and eventually be close to Al's rebounding and overall D. Al was a presence on the floor. So will Woody.....

:)

We will never know what Al Lorenzen could have been as a result of his injury.

I'm thinking big Al was a top 10 recruit. We probably haven't had anyone ranked higher since then.
