Its a shame then. Seems like a waste of a lot of talent to have him hardly ever walk on the field or maybe start 1 year. But who knows what will happen.

Won't Derby by a redshirt JR when Vandenberg graduates? He will get his chance along with Rudock.

He'll be a redshirt junior after Vandy graduates so that would give him 2 years, but only give Rudock 1 year.

It seems like he is on his way to starting when Vandenberg graduates so I don't see how it is a waste of his talent.

Hmm... no matter what?

What if demoted to 4th string after Jake shows up and Weinke has an incredible fall practice and he founds himself as #4 on the depth chart.

RIP: Bob Braverman of Friendly Farms on the hill in Iowa City. A great Hawkeye, a better farmer and even greater man.

I can understand him wanting to stay at QB if he can stay ahead of Ruddock.

If Ruddock passes him on the depth chart by the start of next season(2012) I would think he might have a change of heart or transfer.

He might want to at least keep his options open...making a switch hasn't seemed to hurt McNutt at all.

So many of these guys bolt too soon IMO. Wasn't there a senior QB for Ohio State who got stuck behind Pryor as a freshman, then came in at the end of a key game (maybe a bowl game) to win it for them? If guys bolt, they never have opportunities like that. The Ohio State guy is probably a super-hero in Ohio now. And QBs can go down fast.

Because many people don't expect him to start even after Vandenberg graduates.

Coming out of high school he was coveted more for his athletic ability, not his quarterback skills.

This will make him a better QB. It means his heart is all in. Now if that makes him a starter I don't know, but at this point it doesn't matter.

Basically what this boils down to is that one QB is going to basically have a short (or non-existent) career as a starter and I think that is why a lot of people want to see Derby move. If he stays and beats Rudock out that means that Rudock will only have his senior year to start which seems like a waste of a good QB. On the other hand, if Rudock jumps him, and Derby stays committed to QB, then we may never see Derby on their field at all.

This is my worry, Don't want to run into a Kyle Mcann/Brad Banks scenario.

Having a good backup QB is never a bad thing. I don't fault him for wanting his shot at QB and maybe he's just not good enough at the other positions to move into the starting spot.

We're either going to have the best 1-2 QB tandem in the Big Ten, or one of these guys will transfer. Seems like a waste of talent to have either Derby or Ruddock on the bench.

Then again...injuries happen. You never know.

Isn't this the entire point of college athletics? You only have 4 years of eligibility, and every year there are more high school superstars coming onto campus trying to take your spot.

Not every recruit is going to pan out. Not everyone can be a 4 year starter. Some people are just destined to sit on the bench.

With all that being said, Rudock has had all of 1 practice in his Iowa career.

Who's to say Gregory or some other under-the-radar prospect won't commit, light up fall camp next year, and then be a 4 year starter?

If I had a nickel for every super duper prospect that never started a single game, or even played a down at Iowa, I would have a bunch of nickels.

I remember AJ playing against Marshalltown Bobcats in the state championship a few years back. Not all that impressive at all, although he could run through our D pretty good with his size but his accuracy was horrible that game, constantly over throwing wide open recievers

AJ looked like the second best QB out there this spring. I don't blame him for wanting to stay at QB. I do agree tho that if he were to get passed by Ruddick or whoever, he would probably be a good candidate for transfer.
