Agree to Disagree in regards Brian Ferentz

If he wants to be a head football coach, he needs to go to a smaller program as a head coach and get some experience before being a head coach in a big time conference? I mean, you talk about cutting corners or cutting in line, he does not deserve the OC position let alone being the head coach at Iowa say in a few years from now. He is having everything handed to him on a silver platter.
agree, let him coach in the mid majors or 1aa

No and they SAY The answer to the question is the question itelf.. Well who would want that job? Coach not to lose. Never give backups any playing time.Example this year. Linebackers. No playing time. Predictable beyond belief gameplay.First play each series "run to right" Bf perfect for task.Win Sat. and hopes alive.GoHawks.
Well that was a surprisingly coherent post.

Who are you and what have you done with the real earlkoppelman?

If Ferentz isn't the next Iowa head coach, the question is can he find another job in college football with equal status.

"Someone with your qualifications would have no trouble finding a top-flight job in either the food service or housekeeping industries."

Well you might be right about that. He's shown that he's learning on the job in this league as an OC. Maybe the program would be better off if he were the OLine coach. I don't know who Kirk would have as OC in that scenario.

To is credit, Brian has brought some freshness and a bit more aggressive approach relative to the past. But there is the tendency, after a nice play to revert right back to the zone play...
Umm Kirk brought in an OC and made him the offensive line coach. Maybe he should have left him as the OC.

HUH I say?? Am real earl barry koppelman.Born on marlow ave at end of big one ww2. In davenport. And could not be more proud of being a hawk fan with many many including you.

Totally depends. If Ferentz the Elder is still coaching and has something of benefit to offer another coach, then yeah, Brian could probably get an OC job at a middling Tier 2 P5 program through a quid pro quo. If Ferentz the elder is not still coaching, then I think Brian, if left to his own devices, would wind up either as a Sun Belt or MAC head coach for a bad program or if he wants to stay in P5, he would be in line to get a TE or OL coach job at a fairly elite program. I could see a team like Florida or Auburn or even Alabama giving him the OL duties. If Mark Stoops was in a bind because his OC suddenly left to be a HC somewhere, I could see Mark MAYBE giving Brain the opportunity to be OC due to the Iowa connection, but that's about the only legitimate, semi-arms length OC job I could envision Brain getting and that would be a remote likelihood of happening.

All I know is that whole process is going to be quite interesting. I still don't think Kirk is gone for another 5 years or so. At that point, will Brian have accrued enough experience to move up? Some fans will say yes, some will say no. Obviously a lot will depend upon the trajectory of the program as a whole at that time, and the results under Brian's offense.

Nepotism aside, it would be nice to find a replacement that has a connection to the program, or is vested in Iowa in some fashion. The last thing I would want to see is a good young coach come in and use Iowa as a stepping stone, which Campbell and Brohm both are going to do. Brian would at least fit that mold.

Another name to at list think about is David Raih, former Iowa QB, currently building up quite a resume in the NFL as an assistant. Would he at least be interested? I don't know. The negative there is that he has very little recruiting experience, but, that's why you put together a staff that does.

At the end of the day, I just want to have a successful program.

Up in Humboldt County. Will going home soon. Niece goes to Humboldt. Stopped surfing loong ago. But always at beach.Beach addict. Fires have lived in Santa Rosa ect.Last year hit with WORST calif Fire. What a nice place. So fires occur. 8 year DROUGHT helps with WEEDS growing at alarming rate. Nature's cycle?? I guess huh. Cal Trans has to help weed abatement. Confusing but many failures in Sonoma Co. Situation sadly not addressed quickly enough. Confusing painful post.Situation needs COMMUNICATION ECT in advance. Hawks win sat. Solid steps towards 9-4.

Thanks Earl. Love your spunk, and your posts. Keep em coming.

A family member had 15 minutes to escape Paradise. Saved his two dogs but everything else is gone. Be safe down south and Go Hawks!

The risk for BF to go outside of the IA program to become a head coach and succeed to the point any P5 school would see him as a valuable commodity is too high. If he went to Toledo or UNI and did not succeed fast, it would be nearly impossible to get another HC position.

Engraining him into the the Iowa program now and turning over the program piece by piece is low risk high reward. At some point he might be named the HC in waiting? This will keep the recruiting at a high level. Pretty easy decision for Brian

Thing is outside of Brian would KF with his reputation of keeping the offense under wraps really be able to attract an up and coming OC even from FCS?

New AD = Bob Stoops. New HC = Phil Parker. Bob Stoops would have 3-5 years to do deep dive search to set Iowa up with the next HC. Phil is getting old so my assumption is age might catch up to him within that time frame.

In today's world, Phil is not old. That said, after my severe soccer knee injury, I lost a lot of interest in coaching. Hurts too much. Age gives one the exposure to injuries. Play a long time and hurt you will eventually get.

I don't want it to end badly for Kirk. He's been an excellent steward for this program. This year has stunk - so much to play for and so few results when it matters. If this continues - big expectations, mid-level results, it won't end well. I really hope it doesn't happen. My bet is that if this would have been a big year this year, followed by a big year next year, he might have called it a career. This forces another 2-3 years out of him. That's my guess.

My thoughts exactly. Brian as the successor is such a hard sell right now. Even with a double digit win season next year Barta wouldn't be able to sneak that through. Kirk won't step down until he can literally hand this over to his son. This trainwreck of a season probably added at minimum another year or 2 of Kirk being the head coach.

"We've got a black hawk down, we've got a black down!"

So, just like in that movie, KF is going to hang around hoping to somehow get a reasonably good ending... but the reality is it's only going to continue to get worse...

Playing Devils advocate here, if IA wins B1G West next year and wins B1G championship but falls just outside if CFP, does that change anyone's tune?

I know it's a huge IF currently.

If that happens, it'll all be due to the defense. So, no.
