After watching the film. (Steve Deace observation)

I re watched the game yesterday morning, and I wasn't going to post this, but I just heard Deace on 1460 observe basically the same thing as I did.

Clayborn, Binns, Klug, Ballard and Daniel were almost non existent that last drive and most of the game.

Daniels > Klug

If were going to go 3-0 this last stretch were going to need AC to play like an All American.

First time all year I've been disappointed in the DL.

And Jon, before you say it, I realize that Indiana get rid of the ball quickly.

Clayborn had a hurry (IU was lucky they had a receiver in the area, else it would have been int. grounding). He was also close on a couple other plays including the last one. Ballard drew the tripping foul on the second to last drive. IU was using TE's and RB's for help. They were throwing everything at the DE's to stop them including cut blocks, leg whips, nut cups, etc.

Rumor has it that Clayborn has been nursing a leg injury. #34 from Wisconsin should not have made it out of IC alive. Just sayin'.

IMO Daniels has been our most disruptive DL this year by far. It drives me nuts watching him come out on 3rd down passing situations.

I also saw Indiana with 6 linemen, and a running back chip blocking on several occasions. that is 7 guys blocking 4. You do the math.

I'd also point out an observation that I both saw and observed ... and that was the fact that Chappell was frustrated because they weren't getting much of any big gainers in the passing game.

That's also a product of the SUCCESS of our D in that game.

Also, it's a reciprocal relationship between the DL and the coverage. Iowa has traditionally gotten a bunch of pressure on the QB in the past because of the quality of the coverage. Iowa simply couldn't afford to play tighter coverage against Indiana without getting burnt.

I think that our back seven will likely be much better in coverage in 2011 than there've been in 2010 ... and that will definitely help out the DL.

So are you saying that you disagree with Deace too Jon?

I don't think much of my personal observations during a game, but when I heard Steve Lombardi Deace mention it I felt compelled to post it.

I'm just saying...the DL was suppose to be the strength of our team, and when push came to shove, we won despite their play.

Also...I just heard Ken Miller on KXNO say "I think Clayborns played his way out of the 1st round"

Not that I agree with that statement.

Yeah, I disagree with him in some ways and did so on the phone with him around midnight Saturday. When you know going in that a team has a quick release offense, and your head coach tells the media on Tuesday and then again on pregame radio show not to expect many sacks, you shouldnt be surprised. they got some pressure on him at times real quick, mostly from the inside. They also did some inside twists to confuse the center a bit, as Clauss pointed out.

The guys were doing their work. Clayborn was getting blocked by the T, chipped by the TE at times, and they were sending a third blocker at him with the RB who was cutting at his legs.

The guy ain't freaking superman.

Something that keeps getting lost is that Chappell had his second worst passing day of the season from a rating standpoint, with the game AT ohio state being the worst..that Iowa held him nearly 100 yards below his average...that they got their hands on six passes..that they held Indiana under their rushing yards per game average of 97...that they held Indiana to one touchdown and 18 points below their season scoring average.

Somehow, and I don't really know how, all of that is getting lost. To focus on the last play of the game where someone got open and dropped a ball is hardly an accurate way to analyze a 60 minute performance. To not factor in a team's offensive philosophy and how quickly they get rid of the ball and criticize the defense for not getting a consistent pass rush is hardly an accurate way to break down this game.

I don't care who you are, you can't beat double and triple teams every single play. His special attention has opened the door for Daniel and Ballard. To say he has played poorly is just not seeing what is happening on nearly every single play.

Clayborn is NOT getting double and triple teamed on every play, not even most plays. He is not playing as well this season. Still good, but he is not dominating 1 on 1 like last year.

That and you can almost make the argument that the D line won the game on the last play of the game. They all got a big jump and were right in his face....forcing him to throw it higher and making the receiver stretch for it and pull it in. If they weren't in his face that pass may very well have been right at his chest for an easy catch.

I think there is some truth to this...

But I actually feel badly for our DL...they bust balls to get in the backfield & 95% of the time it doesn't matter -- the ball is gone.

They are demoralized & probably physically exhausted & I can't say that I blame them...

I've said it 18 times already...but I think the coaching staff has really dropped the ball in ALLOWING opposition offenses to scheme away from them like this.

I think having a double team or another player cut blocking you will take its toll through the course of a game. Its hard enough to beat your man and get a sack.

One thing to think about, if we had scored 30 points no one would be talking about how "poorly" the DL played.
