From article:

Ticket sales accounted for the bulk of the income, with UI raking in $780,000 from the gates. It also sold $82,000 in concessions, made $60,000 from programs and bracket sheets, $33,000 from parking and $21,000 from sponsorships.

“We had pre-planned that we thought we needed about 8,000 people to attend in order to just break even without receiving any other additional monies from sponsorships,â€￾ Schamberger said. “When we put those numbers together, we felt confident enough to move forward, and then it was just a matter of hitting that number.â€￾

The financial impact of the trials went well beyond UI. A study conducted by the Convention and Visitors Bureau earlier this year found the event generated more than $5.6 million for Johnson County, drawing 11,655 fans from out of the area who spent on average $201 a person while in town.

Klatt confirmed that the success of the trials has led to discussions about hosting future national events in wrestling and other sports.

I'm glad to hear the income from this event will go back into Iowa wrestling, although the statue and upgrades have already occurred...so it appears the U of I was counting on making a profit at the trials to cover these costs or they've freed up money to be spent elsewhere.

"The surplus will be used to pay for the 7-foot bronze statue unveiled at the trials of former Hawkeye wrestling coach Dan Gable outside the arena, as well as upgrades to the wrestling program’s facilities, UI says."
