A number of things become evident

1 the portal business is out of control. Seems like just about everyone is entering the portal these days. Is this what college sports is about?

2 Iowa will not be a winner and really not much of a player in the Portal season. Yes its kind of becoming a season just like the recruiting season

3 McCaffrey is a not a good recruiter and really has no staff that excels in the process

4 Iowa will be low to mid pack in Big Ten next year and for the forseeable future

Well, great! Now I can stop following the news and throw in the towel on next year’s team. Thanks for the smoke clearance.

The power has shifted away from the players to having zero to where they can have some control over their destiny if they don't like the first school they chose. While I don't particularly like it, it isn't for me to decide and we'd better get used to it. This year could be an outlier anyway. With the pandemic and the extra year, you have many more players jumping in than you will in a typical year. And many of these players may be left without an opportunity which would give future players pause before entering.

And I don't consider this year a lost year for Iowa with regards to the portal. First of all, the dust hasn't settled. We may still wind up with an addition or two. Plus, we haven't lost anyone yet. How many teams can say that? Yes, we may still but right now it isn't looking all that bad to me.

We lost Nunge

Iowa so far hasn't been a big loser in the portal. Iowa still might get a player out of this and with Riley coming early Iowa is still in a good position especially if Wiesy comes back.

Yeah, Im not sure Riley is the answer. While he will help, will he be better than Murray was? If not, we are extremely weak in the post.

BUT, if Fran adapts his philosophy to his team, good things could happen.

There are still a crap ton of players in the portal. Let's pump the brakes on the "Fran won't land anyone" train for now. Robbins is still very much in play.

I completely disagree with you on #3 and #4. Maybe you should find a different team to root for. You seem like a miserable bastard.

Of course, how could I have forgotten that? I kind of view him as one of the exceptions to what a lot of others are doing in that he wasn't just jumping ship to see what was out there. But yes, a big loss.

This.

Jack did transfer, but I think it's fair to say his situation isn't a byproduct of the "portal phenomenon". What he's gone through is pretty exceptional, the kind of situation where you'd expect a player to want/need a fresh start. More than just...I want more playing time or the grass is greener over there.

I'll admit I havent paid much attention to portal happenings in the past few days.

Seems like there was quite a bit of optimism for Robbins and all of a sudden everyone is doom and gloom again.

De he give some hints that he's not coming here? Or is it just the fact that he hasn't announced anything that makes people think he's not coming to IC?

The portal is great for the players and I think they have the right to go where ever they want if their is a coaching change or a life event such as what Nunge experienced. Just going into the portal because of playing time to me isn't enough. Honor your commitment, improve yourself, get a degree, and make yourself a better person/player.

See I try to look at this portal business as this is how it's supposed to have been all this time.

I look at it as coaches need to adjust. Much the same way when kids started leaving early and then the 1 and dones. Does it make it tougher for them and add more to their plate? Sure but so what they get paid millions off the backs of these kids that don't get paid so there shouldn't be any sympathy for them.

I think Fran is great at recognizing talent early on and going after them. He's just been left at the alter 2nd or 3rd in line most of time. Is that because he's a bad recruiter? Or because he's at Iowa? If he was at say a Michigan or other higher profile program ya think he could be closing the deal with those same kids?

I won't say he's not a good recruiter. He's taken too many 3 star kids and done some great things with them to go that far.

Great that you have the knowledge and time to evaluate 2000 players!

I don't.

This guy has a stat, PRPG! that essentially rates players. General rule of thumb, a player from a Power 5 team with a 3 rating or higher is pretty good. He tries to adjust for level of competition but obviously it isn't perfect. For example, CJF, JBo, Weiskamp, and Garza were all over 3 (with Garza having a crazy 7.0 rating which is very, very high).

There are currently 25 players with a 3 rating or higher in the portal. There are 75 with a 2 rating or higher. Solomon Young from ISU last year was a 2.6 and he's basically the definition of a totally fringe starter. Rasir Bolton is the 11st best transfer on the market.

Point is, there just isn't a lot of quality despite the quantity.
