Advice for Rudock

Implying he's better than JR because of the season he had at BFU this year is insane and ignorant. He played a bunch of horrible teams. Comparing the numbers of the two is apples to oranges. Hell, the kid from Wartburg lit it up this year. Maybe we should have had him.

I'm not bent out of shape on Sokol. He just wasn't very good. Did you watch him play? Watch his conference championship game and get back to me.

I didn't imply that he was better then JR at all. I literally just said he won a bowl game.... That's it. And by me mentioning that he had 32 TDs is what it is. He threw for 32 tds. That would have been more fun for him to have done then ride the bench at Iowa if he'd have stayed. That's all I meant by that. Your the one comparing the two QBs. I'm just comparing what he did to what he would have done if he stayed. Your reading way too much into what I said to pick an argument with yourself....

Neither of Iowas qbs had to be happy with the year they had. But I bet Sokol was. That's all I'm saying. Maybe he didn't live up to your expectations but he didn't lose to ISU at home. I guess I did compare them a little by saying that but I stick by it. That loss is just beyond inexcusable....

I like JR I would rather he stay. Not necessarily start over sunshine but I think Iowa would be better next year with him backing up CJ then not. But I don't blame him one bit if he decides to leave either. He's not going to the NFL so next year is it for him. If he'd rather ride the bench or possibly start at Michigan then ride the bench at Iowa then that's up to him to prioritize. Not us...

2-1 vs Minnesota not 1-2. 2009 and 2012 were both wins for Iowa.

The loss I'm thinking of was when kirk had no talent Ricky stanzis Sr year. It's really hard to get a win when you have that little of talent. Specially when you are playing in an environment like the gophers have put together.

For those of you who got to watch Hayden ball who would you say had the better QB's? It's just my opinion but I think Hayden's did a much better job at recruiting/developing QB's than Kirk.

What continues to baffle me is how bad our offense has been three straight seasons now, and NO changes get made. That's just unfathomable to me. How much clearer evidence do you need to show what we have isn't working??

Amen... Weisman was such a frustrating deal cause on one hand he was kind of successful. He scored a bunch of TDs converted a bunch of 3rd and shorts. Yet he put us in 2nd and 3rd and longs a ton too. And by no means is that his fault. Just how he was being used. The play calling was so head scratching. Powell hardly playing Willies hardly playing and being run off more or less.... I'm with ya that coming into last yr with whatever plan they think they had was just the dumbest thing anyone could have came up with.

Which begs the question: why are so many hacked off that Brian Ferentz was named "run game coordinator"? To me, ABGD (Anybody But Greg Davis) could make our running game better.

As to "Advice for Rudock", look through a season's worth of this forum and ask yourself why Jake Rudock would want advice from ANY of us?!

You are right bob. The smart money does EVERYTHING Kirk tells you to do. He really brings the talent out of these players.

Most are mad BF is getting that title as a stepping stone to him replacing Davis after next yr. It's just a title and maybe a raise. I don't see how that'll change his Oline duties. Maybe we'll get an explaination on that or maybe not... I don't see him calling plays cause if he's doing that WTF are they paying Davis to do...

I woulda lost a bet after the regular season that Davis would be back this yr but since he is I doubt he'll be back in 2016... Will Kirk be around to hire his kid to be the OC after that is the question..

Id be careful to leave the comforts of Kinnick. Let me ask you this....What happened to that derby guy or that other backup? Who knows?

Maybe some of you remember James Vandenburg. He had a great career at Iowa. Leaves kirk and greg.......BOOM cut from the Vikings. Who gets cut from the vikings?

Jake who do you think you are Ricky Stanzi? Grow up peter pan, the grass isnt greener outside Kinnick.

Trying. Too. Hard.

Im with ya bobby. Trying too hard is like throwing passes further than 4 yards....its just stupid. Dance with who brung ya. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Do you even KNOW what you're posting? I know you DEFINITELY have no grasp on what the issue(s) is/are.

And Jake transferring MAY have more to do with GD than KF. Maybe KF wants him around but GD doesn't. Would YOU stay under those circumstances?

Or maybe Jake is just tired of "all things Iowa". Can't say I would blame him.

Willies and Beathard have a twitter love-in, Beathard all but backs Willies, Willies QUITS...and Beathard is named the starter. Why put in the work and film time just for that?

Loyalty counts with some people. I assume Jake is one of them.

I know the problem. The problem is these kids walking away not trusting a proven system. If you are going to get bent out of shape and transfer and think that will make you a better football player than you are crazy. Now I get that Iowa doesnt have the rb to hand off to or the wr to throw to but the system is there.

If a national championship OC cant help you than nobody can.

Vandenburg would be starting in the NFL had he had 2 more years with GD. With a little higher football IQ and kirks connections he would be making bank right now.

First of all we don't know if that's his thought process at all. I bet it's not. Just my two cents but I'm sure he feels like he's been screwed over. He played well at times and didn't turn it over much. He probably thinks he did what was asked of him. So he's rewarded a couple weeks after the season by being demoted before spring ball... By Ferentz doing something he's never done before by releasing a depth chart in Jan... So he may be looking to leave just to be happier and some place he feels wanted at. I can see he not feeling very wanted by this staff now. That seems like human nature to me. I don't think it's a system thing so much or a he thinks he's better then he is thing at all. Or even playing time. He also knows if he goes there the starting gig won't be handed to him there either...

As far as Vandenburg being a starting qb in the NFL your really stretching it... He had a shot and couldn't touch Christian Ponder.... What else do we need to know. Come on. I thought he had some arm talent sure. But it sure takes more then just that....

You "trust" GDs system? The only thing "proven" about it is that Vince Young and Colt McCoy--along with Texas aura--can run it successfully. Young and McCoy could run almost ANY system and make it look "proven".

The issue is personnel, which falls back to recruiting.

In GDs defense, nobody abandons a successful series of play-calling better than he does.

If he were to leave I just feel bad for CJ. Can't wait for all those in favor of Jake being benched, complaining about how poor of a he qb is, to start complaining that we have no back up in the event CJ doesn't take us to the promised land and live up to the message board hype.

We had some really good QB play from '84 to '91. Kirk tries to evolve his QB's so they make fewer mistakes, not necessarily make more plays in ensuing seasons. At least, that's how it seems.

Tear-by-year or career-by-career:

Hayden years:

1979-1980: Gordy Bohannon, Pete Gales, Phil Seuss--all serviceable, but none close to "really good", let alone "great"
1981-1985: Chuck Long--nothing need be said
1986-1988: Mark Vlasic, Dan McGwire, Tom Poholsky, Chuck Hartlieb--pretty darn solid group
1989-1991: Matt Rodgers and some one else--again, pretty solid
1992: Jim Hartlieb--was having agood year until injury, actually received post-season award votes
1993-1997: Matt Sherman, Paul Burmeister and others--Both pretty good
1998: A haze, might explain season

Kirk years:
1999-2000: Jon Beutjer, Kyle McCann--neither one has many--if any--fans
2001-2002: Kyle McCann, Brad Banks--people loved Banks, McCann not so much
2003: Nate Chandler--a good one-season QB, a quasi-poster child for "game manager"
2006-2006: Drew Tate, Jason Manson, Jake C--started with a bang, ended with a 6-7 season; you either loved Tate or didn't; nobody, by end of his time here, loved Jake C
2007: Jake C, with glimpses of Arvell Nelson and Ricky Stanzi--in Spinal Tap parlance, "best leave it unsaid"
2008-2010: Jake C, Ricky Stanzi--Stanzi took job, very good career, maligned for end of 2010 when injuries crushed the D
2011-2012: JVB--after the promise of 2009 at O$U, didn't end up like we thought
2013-2014: Jake R, CJB--despite early love for JR, it appears CJB walks very close to water level

In sum, Hayden had more consistent guys, more stability for the starters, and definitely had more depth most years. Rarely did it mean doom if starter went down. Kirk may have had some really good ones, but he didn't have Chuck Long...
