Add Fry examples: Let's talk risk/reward decisions in football with examples

Example...........Offense is sputtering in the recent PSU game. Most yards (over 100) are being accumulated by Smith-Marsette on kick returns so later in the game when we need a score it would appear he has been instructed or elects to simply field the ball if it is kicked into the end zone after PSU scores. By his body language it appeared to me there was never any intent other than to field the ball and not run it out.

Should have been instructed by the coaches on this day to run it out regardless of whether it is in the end zone or not......potential opportunity missed by taking the low risk route which gave us the guaranteed low reward. PSU coverage in this situation had been marginal all day.

It's a difficult thing to talk about, because every example is hindsight.
Risk reward decisions can only be made in the moment. It's all analysis after that.(odds).
It's about the vibe and feel of things. Its about that gut feeling and trusting it and not letting the brain over ride it. Its about knowing.
It's about knowing how far to lead any given receiver and knowing they will catch it. It's about knowing the wind. It's about knowing you can get the guy across from you to jump off sides or that you can juke him to turn out while you go in. It's about when to cut. It's about not that the odds say going for it on 4th down is the best odds or that you THINK you can get it. It's about knowing you can.

Hayden called a fake punt run up the middle by the upback on 4th and 11 and it got stuffed at the LOS. The reason I remember it is because of how horrible of a call it was.

I remember that. I took it as he was really disappointed because the kick was too good to give him a chance. It looked like hiss reaction when he caught it was initially to take the ball out. He wouldn't have had that reaction if he knew the whole time he couldn't. That's how I saw it anyway. And that's if I'm remembering the same one. I remember him slapping the ball.

Same one........you remember the details better than I but it just seemed like we missed on giving our best weapon of the day (and fastest) another chance to make a difference when all else was struggling in a winnable game.

Interesting observations on this item.

I wanted him to run it out anyway. The kick was just so deep it made him hesitate for just a second, then he knew he couldn't and it really upset him. He wanted it bad.
