According to my friends in Columbia, MO

If you do some google searching you will find that there isn't global happiness among schools in the B12. The old Big 8 colleges, or as it was known - Oklahoma and the 7 dwarfs - are not all happy campers. Lots of concern of how Texas, Tx AM, and Oklahoma are running the conference.
If I recall correctly, there were opponents against adding the Texas schools prophesying just this thing -- that the Big8 would be swallowed by the Texases and Oklahoma.

I completely agree. Mizzou to the Big 10 and TCU to the Big 12. Move Oklahoma to the Big 12 North. Maybe the north would have at least one good team then.
then the Big 12 drops ISU, picks up Arkansas, and moves Ok St to the North with OU

Mizzou is flat out lobbying to join the Big 10... evidently the Gov. of Missouri made a comment about it yesterday as did the Chancellor and the AD.

With the "switch" by Matt Hoch, I hope like heck SOMEone from the Iowa staff or administration would OPPOSE it...

The governor of MO and the Chancellor of Mizzou meet to discuss the topic...

That is just TO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys are talking about recruiting and its not the only thing that drives the pick for who gets the 12th spot.

Mizzo sports ? average.

Mizzo money? average

Border war , wont be a choice :)

New market? not really , we already get players from Missouri and they backed out of contracts with us before. The Big Ten , Texas and Okla , already own the state in recruiting , otherwise Mizzo would be kicking some ***.

What do we stand to gain besides an easier trip?
As far as getting to the games? How many fans get tickets for away games? The Ohio State game was like 77k OSU and 3k hawk fans, so that point is mute , when its really a question of bus or plane trip for the players and player personnel.

I think we will be looking at a new market with a better school and not another lower tier B10 school. Look at the past , we took Penn State.

Imagine your teeter totter and put Penn State as your constant and add and remove teams below , which one equals out

TCU
Rutgers
Mizzo

What did Penn State bring to the table , probably top 3 academically and athletically , new viewer area , new market , recruiting the east coast , already proven in sports , namely football which is where your money is because you have 22-24 players on offense and defense + kicker + punter in football and 5 or 6 in basketball , more chances you have to make a player pro and in turn get the Alumni booster bucks..football is where the money is hands down.So now thats thats settled , beyond academics where are we looking...hmm a football school so we can even out the teams and run a championship title game...to make more money.

You gotta say TCU and Rutgers ..maybe even Utah looks better than Pitt (who wont leave) and ho hum Mizzo.

if we take Mizzo we might as well just take Iowa State and make it a quick painless death.

Breaking into the Kansas City recruiting scene in a bigger way would be very good for the Big 10 and the Hawkeyes. There's a lot of great talent in that area and it would be fabulous to seize it away from the Big 12.

Most of the comments I see on adding a 12th team are opinions on what would be best for the Big Ten. That is fine, but let's discuss what would be best for the Iowa Hawkeyes. As I see it, there is only one team that could be added to the Big Ten that would actually improve the chances of Iowa winning Big Ten championships (in all sports) in the future. And, that one team is Missouri.

Why? Recruiting.

Right now Iowa gets a lot of players from Illinois, from Chuck Long to Bryan Buluga. Iowa could not be successful without the kids we get from Illinois. Why do we get kids from Illinois? Illinois is a net exporter of Division 1 talent. That is, there are more Division 1 kids in Illinois than there are scholarships at big time schools in the state. Thus, many kids need to leave the state to play. Iowa being a neighboring state is able to take advantage of this.

Like, Illinois, Missouri is also a net exporter of Division 1 talent. However, currently Iowa is not able to take much advantage of this because Missouri is not in the Big Ten. Kids growing up in Missouri watch media coverage of the Big 12 and dream of playing for a Big 12 school. Take football, for instance. Nebraska, Kansas State, and Kansas all have between 7-14 kids from Missouri on their rosters. Thus, every year there are 20-30 kids that don't play football at Missouri, but that play for teams in Missouri's conference.

If Missouri joined the Big 10, within five years those 20-30 kids who don't end up at Missouri, but who do end up at schools in Missouri's conference, will be playing in the Big Ten. And, Iowa being a neighboring state (and unlike Illinois which has plenty of in-state talent) will be by far the number one beneficiary of this. Think of how many kids on the Iowa roster are from Illinois. Now think of the future with a similar number of kids from Missouri.

In other words, Missouri joining the Big Ten would be a huge advantage for Iowa. It is okay to debate which school would be best for the Big Ten to add. There is no question, however, as to which school would be best for the future success of sports at Iowa. That school is Missouri.

Initially, outside of ND, I was opposed to adding anyone else to the Big 10. I felt this way knowing full well that ND would never join the Big 10. However, I have been warming up to the idea of Missouri joining the Big 10. They do seem to be interested, and it would make for a nice border rivalry for Iowa. They have been beating Illinois on an annual basis for awhile now so they might as well make it count for something, and they could still play Kansas OOC each year like we do with Moo U.

I just posted this elsewhere...but I think the Big Ten should extend the invite for Missouri to join the conference and then at the last moment...pull the rug out from under them and bring in South Dakota State instead.
