According to my friends in Columbia, MO

Mizzou is flat out lobbying to join the Big 10... evidently the Gov. of Missouri made a comment about it yesterday as did the Chancellor and the AD.

I really think this is going to be the only way the bigten expands. I think that the conference will always just sit back and not do it, but if someone comes banging on the door then they may be more inclined to make the change. The more I have thought about it the more I like Mizzou in the Bigten.

it would be great to open the St Louis market to our games, especially since that is where more and more Big Ten teams are recruiting from

Now that would re-ignite a heated rivalry with some very bad blood and history behind it.

There's this, and this, and of course they hamstrung our out of conference recently with this.

What would the game be called, and what trophy would they play for?

At least they are within driving distance for an away game; and St Louis recruiting is important.

How far is campus / stadium from St Louis?

As a fan, I think I would like this. It makes sense geographically, and sets up for a natural border war for us, which is always fun. Assuming this would apply to basketball too - I miss the Iowa/Missouri hoops game that we used to have ever year during the late 90's and early 2000's. I don't know why they cancelled that.

Breaking into the Kansas City recruiting scene in a bigger way would be very good for the Big 10 and the Hawkeyes. There's a lot of great talent in that area and it would be fabulous to seize it away from the Big 12.

Damnit i want ND, every BCS team needs to stop playing them and force them to join a conference.

The governor of MO and the Chancellor of Mizzou meet to discuss the topic...

If we do pick up Mizzou then I think it would be a pretty good idea for the big 12 to pick up TCU. Perfect location and they always seem to be pretty good.

If you do some google searching you will find that there isn't global happiness among schools in the B12. The old Big 8 colleges, or as it was known - Oklahoma and the 7 dwarfs - are not all happy campers. Lots of concern of how Texas, Tx AM, and Oklahoma are running the conference.

I think the two biggest objections that Mizzou fans have are they would lose their rivalry with Kansas and it negatively impact their recruiting of Texas players. On the plus side they feel as an institution they would fit better academically.

Missouri doesn't have to stop playing Kansas. That is why they have non-conference games. The Texas recruiting would take a hit, but they could tap into KC and St Louis more and get more local talent, as well as the Florida market like other Big Ten schools. I think a lot of the Big Eight schools (except Okie) regret bringing in the others to make the "twelve" but I think it would benefit a North school greatly to join a different conference (Colorado is too far away from the rest of the Big Ten, but Kansas (st) [maybe nebraska?? but probably not] missouri or isu [bleh] would fit geographically if they were interested.

I understand the appeal of Rutgers or one or two of the other mentioned schools with the NYC market and such, but i see it as too big of a challenge, just like Colorado or Texas would be too far for some schools, so would Rutgers be too far to travel for Iowa Minnesota Illinois, etc.

Honestly, if ND does not want to join a conference (and it appears they don't) then Missouri would be one of a few short list choices that would make sense geographically academically athletically and recruiting-wise.

Don't forget monetarily. That Missouri market is an appealing addition to the B10.

I completely agree. Mizzou to the Big 10 and TCU to the Big 12. Move Oklahoma to the Big 12 North. Maybe the north would have at least one good team then.

Columbia is about 124 miles from both STL and KC, so with the 70mph speed limit, under two hours away. Add in that the suburbs extend out quite a ways, it less than 90 minutes to each metro area. FYI, Lawrence KS is about 20 to 25 miles from metro KC.

The KU-Mizzou matchup would continue. Neither school would want to give that up. They rivalry extends well beyond football and sports - it goes back to the civil war and the ransacking and burning of buildings in Lawrence at the hands of Missouri troops.

I spent some time at KU med last week, and have talked with a lot of KU folks over the past couple. Many of them see Mizzou jumping to the B10 as a forgone conclusion.

And as long as the rivarly games can continue, they are taking the "don't let the door hit you on the way out" attitude.

I like the idea of adding Missouri, if the B10 is indeed expancing. I just worry they will back out and we will have to add Northern Illinois instead at the last minute.
