Absentee Norm

With todays technology, can someone tell me why Norm Parker needs to be "at the game?" Why can't he help coach, add input, advise, etc. from where ever he may be?? He could be set up with a computer. Heck, get a grad student with a camera and a computer to relay messages. Does it matter if he's in the pressbox or in a hospital suite??

Yesss.. Seriously. All I hear is how bad he wishes he could be there.

P.S. What should I expect from anyone who calls themselves "cubby" . I had a gerbil named cubby once, but I lost him. Are you him, and was it dark?

clever...........nope it's not me, internet tough guy.

To answer the question I read somewhere that coaches can't have access to outside communication during the game. Therefore even if Norm was feeling up to watching the game he could not call Kirk at half and offer advice.

that sounds like a plausible rule ... and we all know the NCAA has about as much common sense as my 3-year-old ... but maybe this rule should be updated in light of today's technological advancements ... certainly we don't want Tommy from DM calling the team with blitz-protection adjustments, but why can't a laid-up coach (Norm Parker, Mark Dantonio) get a waiver to get connected?

As Hawkfromnorwalk said, the rules regarding outside communication during the game are somewhat strict. If I remember correctly, there was even some concern that when Dantonio texted Narduzzi during the Wisconsin game, there might have been a breach in the rules. However coaches headsets and phones are excepted from the rule.

Norm could watch the game in the hospital and contact, say, Phil Parker or somebody.

I disagree with one assertion here- Tommy from Des Moines could be our secret weapon. I say we include him in the game planning while Norm is out.

There are rules against it, as has been stated. A couple years ago, JoePa actually wanted to coach FROM HOME on Saturdays. Just watch the game from his couch and call the plays in. The NCAA put the kibosh on that in a hurry.

But just from a logistical standpoint, it would be hard to do. Without a closed circuit TV feed, he'd be at the mercy of ABC, BTN, ESPN or ESPNU when it came to the camera angles and stuff like that. The coaches on the sideline and in the booth have the best view of the field and can see all sorts of things that we as fans cannot. To have him try to call plays and whatnot by looking at shots of screaming fans and close-ups of players would be counter-productive.

I'm sure that they already have the capability to show a closed circuit view of the game to Norm anywhere he wants to watch it. The setup that major schools have will show multiple angles at the same time with the offensive or defensive calls embedded. I'm sure their offices have video sharing and I would bet it wouldn't be hard to stretch that to somewhere else on campus where he would be comfortable. I'm not sure this would be that hard to do, Norm probably doesn't need the stress associated with the situation though.
