Yeah starting to wonder if the D is beginning to skid. Very rough day at Purdue followed up with a bad performance against the worst rushing O in the Big Ten.

Dabo and Nick both also pulled the "safe" choice at QB and went with freshmen. I'm sure Iowa has some 5 star freshman QB riding the pine right now that Kareful Kirk can put in, right?

Because of our inept offense our defense was on the field almost the entire second half. This same thing happened last year against UW. The defense is going to wear down if they are out there too long because the offense can’t sustain drives. It’s not that hard to figure out.
Make no mistake about it, this Iowa defense is very strong.

Iowa's pass defense has always sucked. Sucked playing Purdue. Sucked playing Minnesota. Sucked playing Northwestern. Pass defense technique is not taught. What irony that Iowa's DC used to be the inept HC of the secondary.
You are correct that the offense has its problems. Both sides of the ball have problems. Neither side attacks consistently. One can blame Kirk for that.

Our pass defense sucked Saturday? Thorson was 15/30 for 122 Yards wth two interceptions. Our pass defense was great Saturday, which game were you watching?
Our rush defense left a little to be desired but again my point is that they were worn down being on the field the entire game.
I think Iowa's D is strong. But being worn out can't be the excuse this week. Time of possession was 31:00 for Northwestern, 29:00 for Iowa.
Iowa's D needs to figure out a way to come through in crunch time. The main reason Iowa had seasons like 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, & 2009 was because their D always came up with big stops even though they were always on the field. Norm always seemed to figure out the right buttons to push.
Phil on the other hand puts out good defenses that can't get it done late. This is not a 2018 issue. This goes back a long time. Like you said, a lot of it has to do with being on the field because of the offense ineptitude but Norm dealt with it. For whatever reason Phil can't.

TOP was close but it was a tale of two halves. By my calculation Iowa’s defense was on the field for roughly 20 minutes in the 2H. That is when you start to wear down. Our only TD drive was a one play drive.
That is why I mentioned in other threads, Iowa had NW on the ropes in the first half, but our coaches do not have any killer instinct. Most respectable teams would have been up 17-0 or more in the 1H of that game and had it all but put away. Iowa didn’t do that.

Regardless, they still held jNW to 14. The offense lost the game, and the defense lost it against Purdue. It was a joint effort against Wisconsin.

Tackling was terrible Saturday and it was at Purdue as well, but I can’t blame the D against NW.
I can't argue with this logic. Pretty much spot on.

If Iowa downs that punt it's very likely that Northwestern doesn't score a TD on that long run. Iowa's special teams did no favors Saturday. Poor punts, a missed FG, and botching a punt inside the 20 all contributed to the loss. The defense was pretty bad in the second half on 3rd downs but overall they played well enough to allow Iowa to win.
If you can't score more than 10 points at home that's a problem as well. The offense was really bad along with the special teams.
