AARON WHITE INKS WITH IOWA HAWKEYES

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery announced today that Aaron White has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa.

“Aaron White is a versatile front court player who’s tremendously skilled,†said McCaffery. “He can really shoot and pass the ball, and put it on the floor. He’s long and also very athletic. Aaron can finish in traffic, has tremendous court demeanor, doesn’t rattle, he’s very concentrated and really thinks the game. He’s a guy who is really fun to play with because he understands how to win. Aaron is a tremendous team player who can lead his team in scoring or assists.â€

White is a 6-8, 215-pound forward from Strongsville High School in Strongsville, Ohio. White is a four-year letterman and honor roll student. He enters his senior season as a preseason second team all-Ohio selection by Rise Magazine. He helped his high school team earn back-to-back runner-up finishes and reach the district levels his sophomore and junior seasons. White averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks as a sophomore while being recognized on the second team all-conference and all-district squads. He improved his numbers his junior campaign, averaging 19.9 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks, while earning first team all-league and all-district accolades, and being named team MVP. Additionally, White was tabbed MVP of a national holiday tournament in Orlando last December. White also played AAU basketball the last two years with the Ohio Basketball Club.

“I’d like to thank Coach McCaffery for this opportunity,†said White. “I’m very excited to get my senior year going and extremely excited to be a Hawkeye next season. Go Hawks!â€

“We love his versatility,†added McCaffery. “He can play any front court position. Aaron can handle the ball, shoot it from 3-point range, attack the rim, help against the press, be a pick-and-pop four and has a low-post game. He also has the basketball IQ necessary to know and understand different positions effectively.â€

White joins Iowa native Josh Oglesby (6-5, 187), who signed on Wednesday, as Iowa’s fall signees for Coach McCaffery.

Last night, Kakert asked Fran if he could comment. Matt W said he could not. Finally the paperwork is completed, and Iowa can announce the signing.

On paper he appears to be a similar player as it relates to skills in McCabe.

Just need a couple of true post players to go along with Josh and Aaron in this class.

He plays the 3 spot in AAU. Has played all 5 spots on the court for his HS team. Classified as a high major recruit. Really good outside shooter for his height.
Drew a lot of interest from several B10 schools like Purdue, Wisc, etc... WVU and Butler were in on him too.

Here's an article from this summer on the AAU circuit:
JJHuddle.com - Ohio players shine, excel at West Virginia Jam Fest

Despite struggling in the opening half against the Basketball Stars of America, OBC was able to pull away in the second stanza cruising to victory. Next up was the York Ballers, which OBC put away quickly behind Aaron White.

OBC would fall to Team Philly 2012 in the Elite Eight, but not without White making a big splash.

White, who is known by many for his shooting ability, proved he is more than just a better than average shooter. The Strongsville prospect is a better athlete than many believe possessing quick bounce off the deck. White finished well above the rim with a two-handed tomahawk jam in transition. It was quite impressive how quickly he got off the floor. White is starting to catch some attention of the bigger schools, and rightfully so. He was a sleeper, but may not be for much longer as he is proving to be a complete offensive weapon. Look for White’s stock to soar over the second half of July.

He has offers from Duquesne, Ohio University, Akron, James Madison, Toledo, Wright State, George Washington, St. Bonaventure, Northeastern, Bowling Green, Mount St. Mary’s, and Miami (OH) with Ohio State, Penn State, St. Joseph’s, Butler, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Xavier, Texas, and USC showing strong interest.
The comparison to McCabe is a very good one.

JJHuddle.com - Ohio Boys Basketball breakdown: Who are the state's top players by position?
Big Red

This is a term often used to describe one of basketball’s all-time greats in Bill Walton. We use this expression to describe one of Ohio’s best, Aaron White.

The 6-foot-8 red-head continues to fly under the radar despite his high level offensive game. White, who plays at Strongsville High School, has enjoyed a solid spring for the state’s top 17U team, the Ohio Basketball Club.

“Aaron is a long and skilled combo forward,” Stovall explained. “He is more of a 3 right now. He is a good shooter with range to 20-feet. He is okay off the dribble especially against 4’s. He can struggle some defensively against quickness in space. He has been soft in the past, but has really improved his aggressiveness and assertiveness in the last year or so.”

Keep an eye on White; he could be a gem down the road for a very good college.

White has some Big 10 schools and plenty of mid-majors after him.

The consensus that I have gathered through reading blogs/etc... is that White is one of the best players in the state of Ohio. Take it for what it is worth.

Everything I have read I believe the comparison to McCabe is pretty accurate. I think that White may be a little more fluid. I don't want to say more athletic, but maybe a little more refined with the ball in his hands. He will be a very good addition.
