It's too bad Gatens missed playing on this team by one year. His outside shooting would really open things up. Matt's work ethic and the example he gave the Hawks' current upper classmen will transfer through to this class. Matt's contribution to the resurrection of this program has been huge.

Matt should go down in history as one of the best ever. Statistics be damned, he played on some absolutely terrible teams and was asked to do things he wasn't capable of doing at the level needed. Had he played for even mediocre teams, we'd be watching him in the NBA right now. He had as sweet an outside shot as Bobby Hansen.

Definitely wish Gatens and Cole could be on this team. Obviously, that's not possible, never was and never will be. But those are two guys who really deserved to have more success in their careers than they got, and were a big part of laying the foundation for what Fran is trying to do here.

Proof for all that thought Gatens leaving / graduating was no big deal. The kid is missed big time not only on the court, but maybe even moreso off.

It also shows just how much more talent this team has on it now. We lost the heart and soul of the team each of the last two years (Cole, Gatens), and yet we still improved after losing them. You can already see the leadership developing this year, and see that Marble, and White are stepping into that leadership role. From listening to interviews it also seems like May is well respected amongst his teammates even though he comes off the bench. I think this squad is just scratching the surface, the best is yet to come.

Indeed. This is one of the most rawly talented teams I've ever seen at Iowa. Lots of pure athleticism.
