Aaron White is makeing all the plays this year Basabe did last year

He's getting all these hustle baskets. Running the floor dunk and layups. Offensive tip-in's and put backs. He's also obviously doing things Mel didn't (three's, etc). Even when Mel's played well he hasn't been making those plays like he did last season.

Basabe has the skill set of a 5 in a 4's body. White has the skill set of a 3 in a 4's body.

Still think Mel is going to the league after next year?

From the outset, Mel has shown much less energy..Fran talked about it after the OSU game...his game is running the floor, rebounding, blocking shots, dunking in transition. It's not a half court game.

White has more all around game than Mel. I think Mel will have a bounce back year next year and I hope it starts the second half of this year.

Also don't want to see them put 20 pounds on White like they did Mel ;)

lottery baby.

In my defense that language was coming directly from Mels peeps. I took it to mean Mel was going to work super hard to get there. Unfortunately it looks like in meant Mel thought he was going NBA (after the u19 invite) and decided he didn't have to work hard.

FWIW THEY only put on about 10 pounds. Cheeseburgers put on the other 10.

Basabe better man up cuz he won't have any excuses next year when we have a decent 5 to take the heat off.

I agree on White's body-type. He is just going to be one of those wiry body-types that is what I call ''stringy-strong''. He can add a few lbs the next 3 years, but needs to keep his quick-twitch nuerons firing, which combine with his length to allow him to get to balls and the rim. Similar to Shurna of NW.

I have a hard time believing that Mel was actually not conditioned to play at a high pace after months of daily workouts in Sept,Oct and November... maybe he did add some bulk that slowed him a bit, tho. If he is not in shape that is on Fran, but I think he is in shape. As Fran has indicated, he did try to expand his arsenal in the offseason with a face-up game, and it left him a bit in the middle decision-wise,when he gets the ball. He worked mainly off the ball last year, with Jarryd Cole getting the ball in the post and kicking out, ect. Cole is gone, and so is Mel's security blanket.

Mel is a face to the basket offesnive player at this point. He's got a decent first step ala the baseline dunk against MSU (never mind the fact he travelled) and he's got a decent face up jumper when he has the confidence to take it. The problem with that skill set is to use it effectively you have to be able to drive and dish and Mel isn't a good passer at this point. He drives, they double, and he either forces an ugly shot, turns it over, or has to stop and take 3+ seconds to find someone to get the ball to.

He has very little back to the basket game.

Has Mel hit a sophomore wall, or are opponents more keyed in to him after a strong freshman season? Or has he just lost his hustle?

I don't know Mel, but it appears to be a mental thing with him. If he gets stuffed on his first shot attempt or does not get the ball early in a game, it appears that he just kind of shuts down on both ends. He needs to get over that and put in consistent effort all the time. We have seen what he can do. I just want to see it all the time.

The thing with Basabe is that he didn't play well in every game last year. Yes, he is a good player when he shows up, but there are times (including last year) where he wasn't much of an impact. If he can fix that issue, he will be 10x the player he is now.

maybe mel went to that 19 invite and found out he isn't as good as he thought so he packed it in this?

For any normal competing person i would think an experience like that would motivate them to work harder

Mel is a classic college sixth man. He should be coming off the bench, playing with abandon, grabbing boards, and scoring garbage points. Think Dennis Rodman in his Detroit years, or Doug Thomas.

Mel was a unknown last year low 3 star and had Cole to help him thru his growing pains.
this year teams know all about him and can better game plan for him, neither Brommer or Archie are able to take Coles place in the middle
next year with 3 players being able to play the 5 will take a lot of dbl teams off Mel, with his developing a outside shot out to 15-17'
