Aaron White invited to 2014 Kevin Durant Skills Academy

I agree with what a lot of other posters have already said - White needs to develop a consistent jump shot to really elevate his game to All Big 10 1st team performer. JHHawk was right on about the Hawks in the half court offense last year - pretty bad. If you get good ball movement and have shooters who can consistently knock down open shots the offense will be drastically better in the half court set. The good news is the Hawks look to have a good core of shooters returning this year with Ogelsby, Jok and Uthoff. I think the key will be getting White and Gessell to hit the open shot, as well as White demanding the ball down low against smaller defenders.

It is a pipedream to expect Aaron to develop a mid-range or three point jump shot at this stage of his career at Iowa. Last season he would hit an occasional three, very rarely though, however, he shot almost 60% from the field, and only had 39 personal fouls, hit 80% of his free throws and had 220 rebounds, 56 of which were offensive rebounds......

If he plays the 4 position and the team spreads out in the half court, he will have room to operate facing the basket, where he is very tricky and skillful, but he needs the room. If he could develop a short jump hook shot, which is very difficult to stop, he will be an essential member of the team. I will be happy if he has the same stats as last year. He is NOT going to develop a jump shot this Summer, and I am certain Fran will make the necessary adjustments in the transition game which begins with defense, while finding a way to use Aaron's expertise around the basket that we saw his first two years.....

I agree with jack. He's not going to develop into a jump shooter at this point.

White just has to be aggressive attacking the basket. You can pretty much know what type of game he had based on the # of free throws he attempted.

If White plays power forward this year I'm sure he is working on his mid range game. White will want to be a dominant rebounder and scorer if he wants to impress the pros.

It isn't like his jump shot is terrible. If he plays with confidence and fires the open shots he will make enough to be able to attack the basket.

White has never attempted many jumpers 15 footers or otherwise, no distance of jumper was ever his shot.

The difference between now and earlier in his career is that the book is out on him, people now know to back off and dare him to shoot.

I think there is more of a chance of him developing a jump shot than a back to the basket game, he really needs one or the other.

I do agree that a big part of being a decent jump shooter is simply having the mindset to take them.

The bigger problem than his so so jumper is simply not being mentally prepared to shoot. When you are so accustomed to pump faking and driving you have to deliberately break yourself of that habit or you will always hesitate and miss the chance.

You don't really have to even hit that high of a percentage to keep defenders honest, just a few and they'll stop sagging.

He needs to learn to shoot from the shooting guru at San Antonio. That guy turned kawhi Leonard into a good three point shooter.

but good for Aaron this should help him on his way to being a really solid euro player...no that isn't a shot at him as there are really good euro players and I just don't think he is in that upper level that makes the nba...really hope he proves me wrong. Same goes for devyn as I believe him to be in the same boat nba wise.

I have to say that my recollection from AaW's freshman season was that he was a decent mid-range player. I am most shocked he stopped utilizing that part of his game. My opinion is this; having played a boatload of hoops a boatload of years ago, if you're an 80% ft shooter, then you already have a mid-range jumper; you just need confidence to take it. If AaW takes just 35% of his shots from mid-range and he makes 40%, that opens the lane wide for his drives. Last season, he got to the ft line, but he had a helluva time making it all of the way to the rim before getting fouled. He didn't have a whole bunch of and one's...teams were playing off of him. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it!

Rock, I agree. Other than the bolded part, I agree with you. I could be wrong, but I remember that he was a decent mid range shooter his freshman season. Anyway, I believe (sorry to repeat myself), that an 80% ft shooter can absolutely shoot 40% mid range.

I am going to stick with it also, Arvada.....

2 years ago he could step out and hit a 17 footer even an occasional 3, he wasn't a great outsider shooter, but he was good enough to keep defenders honest. Something got lost in the last couple of years, confidence I guess. Imo, that is one of the reasons why I do not think it matters if he is a 3 or a 4. they are not going to put him on the block with his back to the basket. He has to develop some sort of perimeter game for anything to unclog the lane.

Thanks, I thought the same thing but was starting to think that it was my imagination.

I don't recall him ever shooting a mid rang shot more than a handful of times in any season.

He may have had a couple games where he hit one or two his first couple years but since then the frequency went from slim to none.

I agree he should be capable of it.
