Aaron White invited to 2014 Kevin Durant Skills Academy

White is a talent, for sure. Just hoping that after 2 off-seasons of recognition via select honors, it not only maintains / develops his skills but starts to develop his moxy and motivation to assert himself.

His biggest skill deficit is going AWOL for long stretches. Whether he was "checking out" or "deferring" will bear out this season.

While I think he was guilty of deferring at times, I think the biggest reason for his disappearing acts was because there wasn't anything there for him. When teams defended him to take away the drive, what else was he going to do in the half court? If he had a decent jumper, I think we would have seen him be much more assertive last year. Hopefully, he'll have one this year, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

AW just need to play like a SR, like Gatens and Marble did. I'm hoping he ups his PPG by 2 or 3 per game, and just have his overall best year. We have seen SR step up and do this many times, hopefully AW just takes that SR leap forward.

What tm said. The jump shot has been the one thing he needed to add to his game to keep the defense from defending the drive. He's had 2 off-seasons to develop it and it hasn't been seen yet. Hopefully this off-season brings that addition to his game or he'll only be a one trick pony again.

2 years ago he could step out and hit a 17 footer even an occasional 3, he wasn't a great outsider shooter, but he was good enough to keep defenders honest. Something got lost in the last couple of years, confidence I guess. Imo, that is one of the reasons why I do not think it matters if he is a 3 or a 4. they are not going to put him on the block with his back to the basket. He has to develop some sort of perimeter game for anything to unclog the lane.

The 15-17 footer was almost nonexistent last season that was his shot as a fr/soph. He and the coaching staff need to get back to getting those long 2 point looks.

I am excited for next season and believe White at the 4 will get him back where he was or beyond in his sr year.

His first touch cannot be at 22 feet for him to be effective.

I'm not sure that's how the staff wants -- or at least wanted to -- use him. Think they were more comfortable with him running the break, being on the receiving end of lobs, grabbing rebounds for put-backs, getting the occasional block or steal. But don't think they expect him to mix it up down low or to try to shoot from beyond 10 feet.

while the outside world of basketball fawns over Aaron White, the levelheaded Hawkeyenation will sit around and tear apart his game and totally under value him.

Hopefully he reads these message boards and decides to leave so Fran has a scholarship to give to a better shooter.

Exactly, if the outside world had to watch every game for a season they would be tearing apart his game too.

completely agree with this.

No, I think they expect a little bit more than a garbage man. Basically, that is what you have described. For Iowa to be successful next year, he has to have a offensive presence, in sets, half court offense. Otherwise, you are basically repeating what we just saw last year.

I do put some of the onus on Fran to improve the Hawks half-court offense. Opponents knew that if they did not let Iowa run, by cutting down on turnovers and rebounding, the Hawks were hapless often.

Watching the Spurs play, the ball movement is amazing. The precision passing and cutting gets some marginal athletes good shots at the rim...like Splitter. This is the final piece for a true championship team...a half court offense so brutally efficient that they can grind down an opposing defense. Like the Celtics of 2008-09 ...they out-executed other teams on both ends, but especially on offense. And that is with a 24 second clock.
Wisconsin did it last year. Iowa and Fran need to figure out how to execute in the half court, then Aaron will get more layups and easy opportunities in the half court.
Aaron needs to improve, but he will never be a prolific shooter.

Thought he would be going to magician school to perfect his disappearing acts in big games! Boooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Diesel, there truly are some Clowns that need to be banned here. What would Chris Williams do?

Have him post up smaller defenders and feed him the rock all freaking day. And when the other team sticks a big guy on him, put him on the perimeter. If he could be an average to above average 3 pt shooter he’ll be 1st team B1G.

I'm actually a diehard Hawk fan that feels Aaron White can only compete against lesser competition. Sorry for your hurt butt brah!

Until he learns how to shoot, the only thing he can do is attack the basket and against a good defender, he has shown he can't do sh*t. Hopefully this year will be different.

Is there a way that any sort of post here about a player's honor or accomplishment might be limited to just that (You know, "Hey, Aaron, way to go!" or "Glad you're in elite company, Aaron!") instead of peeing on his shoes about any shortcomings, real or perceived? I'm just sayin' it would be nice once in a while to keep things positive around here, at least regarding Hokkeyes.

Not just picking on you, ISU, or this particular post. It just seems like any post on HN about a player or a coach devolves into a critical discussion of them or their play. It gets a little old some times.
