A theory: It was Norm Parker all along

Norm was pretty special. Even more important at this point, though, is that Phil doesn't seem to be. Your coordinators have to be leaders.

We conducted an extensive NATIONWIDE search for Norm's successor and found that the best Defensive Coordinator in the country was buried on our staff.

Amazing, right? Unbelievable how uncannily lucky we were.

On the otherhand, i will agree that I too liked seeing the new "wrinkle" on our defense. The 3rd down extra man rush (i won't really call it a blitz) was a welcomed sight and actually seemed effective in our scrimmage yesterday.

Guys, why can't you get this? Norm's defensive scheme was successful while most of the B1G's offenses were 3 yards and a cloud of dust (mostly up to 2007). No way Norm's scheme (or Phil's) could stop, for example, tOSU's or Meechigan's offense. You say it's difficult for most defenses to stop those offenses? I say Iowa has a particularly difficult time stopping those offenses because those offenses pass the ball and are in space. Iowa's defense is particularly bad in those two areas. Lack of athleticism.

Did you know Michigan is running a pro style offense? Might be a good matchup for Iowa. :)

Brady Hoke Discusses Pro-Style Offense, Gardner On 97.1 The Ticket « CBS Detroit

After building its offense around the talents of Denard Robinson the past two seasons, Michigan’s return to its traditional offense has many excited, including Hoke.

“It’s what we’re comfortable with and what we believe in,â€￾ Hoke said. “Getting the fullback in the football game, maybe getting another lead back from a tight end or U-back or whatever you want to call it, I think really is going to help us as a football game. I think it helps our defense because of the combination blocks at the line of scrimmage and the toughness that we want to play with.â€￾

Precisely. That defense is great at stopping guys like John Navarre. It stinks at stopping guys like Jordan Lynch.

Michigan's offense also passes the ball. Their QB also runs in space. It has become a tOSU clone. It's actually better than tOSU's because Devin Gardner, Michigan's QB, can pass the ball better than Braxton Miller, tOSU's QB, but it also looks like neither QB may make it out of the B1G without injury, making them more and more into pocket passers. So, Iowa defenders will have worry more about tackling tOSU and Michigan offenders other than the QBs in space.
