A really great win

If you looked at the stats you would think Minny would have been the winner. Minny had 140 more yards, two drives worth. Minny had better time of possession and 3rd down efficiency. Until the end it was no turnover margin for either team. But for once in one of Iowa's 5 big games of the year the hawks won the red zone battle and scored TDs more often than not. The hawks 3 for 3 with red zone TD drives in the first half was the difference.

One of Minny's first long drives ended in a missed field goal and those are like turnovers and yield empty yards. Unlike the Mich and Penn St games Iowa did not have the turnovers and did not give the opponent the very short fields. Iowa's defense did the rest coming up with key stops in the red zone to force field goals.

My key play was the first drive by Iowa when getting the TD had to be a huge boost.

What was your key play(s)?

It was a great win. I was damn nervous though with 1:52 left and the threats they possess. I felt our o-lines and d-lines played exceptional. Our secondary?? Oh momma. We need to shore that up fast. Koerner was so out of position most of the time and the dropped pick.....I was going nuts

Yeah, didnt really mention the hawk pass coverage. Minny's 3 main receivers overmatch us if we play man to man a lot. Yet our zone coverage with the time Morgan had to throw led to lots of open holes to throw the ball to.

It would be great if we had two very close to lockdown man to man corners next year.

Koerner, in one drive, did the following.

Missed a one on one tackle that turned a three yard gain into a nineteen yard gain.

Got caught peeking into the backfield on play action or RPO, then had a long TD dropped right over the top of him.

First play, next series, Gophs bottled up, he lets a pick slip right through his hands.

The fact that he leads this team in tackles is a very misleading stat. First of all, a free safety shouldn't be near the lne of scrimmage that often to begin with. Second of all, it's only a matter of time before the other team exploits it.

Is this is on Parkers scheme it may be one of the few links in Parkers chain. Koerner sure seems to whiff on a lot of tackles in critical situations.

Oh, well, IowaLaw loves him. Anyone know if they are simply preserving Merriweather's redshirt, or if he has one? Or is this a classic case of rhe union card playing out. Rob was even confused as to Kirk's explanation why Schott got his spot back after injury but not Merriweather.

We really REALLY missed Brents in this game. Said during the week that we would. He played well against Minnesota last year, and then we lose Oju on top of it.

Where is that Minnesota team that looked like shit and almost lost to Georgia Southern in the non conference?

The key was scoring a TD on the first drive, stopping them, and scoring another. The third touchdown on 3 drives dictated the rest of the game.

Also, the decision by Fleck to not take the points and go for it on 4th down down 7 in the 3rd quarter was awful. I know their kicker sucked, but it was like a 30 yarder. If you have zero confidence in him hitting that then you better go for 2 every play. Fleck is a good coach and will learn, but he needs to show more patience and resiliency especially on the road. Kirk stood there while he punched himself out.

We have missed Brents all year as he could be a starter, maybe he was slated to be a starter during camp.

Having Josh Jackson leave early before last year probably cost us the Purdue and PSU games.

Who wasn't nervous then? We've seen that movie a hundred times, it seems like.

I'm not sure but I wonder if they are trying to preserve a redshirt with Brents. I thought I read somewhere a while back that they are preserving it with Merriweather.

We played fairly well. It was a good game.
Can't believe we didn't get that one pick, basically a hail Mary into double coverage. If we could have and drove for another td, that would have been the nail in the coffin.
Seemed like we let up a little in the end, but it's hard to say, because I hate to tell you all but Minnesota is a pretty good ball club this year.

Minny's receivers are the best I have seen in the Big 10. How many 50/50 balls did their QB just toss up? They always seemed to come down with them.
This. Most of the coverage by Iowa's CBs was good coverage. Dude was dropping them in windows. There was of course the blown assignments, but that was bound to happen with the game plan to stop the run. the man-to-man was good most of the time and zone seams were small.
