It would be easy and natural for Hawkeye fans to to react with anger to Dan Dakich's nasty comments about Adam Woodbury and for an ugly situation escalate into something worse. So let me offer an alternative, one Fran McCaffery may have unwittingly suggested when he said on his radio program last night: "I should tell him to go buy some lottery tickets. He’d have a better chance to win the lottery than to ever in any way recommend what I should do with my player or my team."
Learning of Fran's comments, Dakich snarkily tweeted last night "Frannie Goes off on a tangent during his night time radio show and I want to 'keep it going'? Lotto tix?? Huh ? Sad."
Here's my proposal:
Every Hawkeye fan spend a buck or two to buy a lottery or lotto ticket, whatever their state sells, and mail it to the Iowa Sports Information Office immediately to put in a box or envelope that Fran could hand Dakich the next time he sets foot in Carver-Hawkeye (which I'm told will be at the end of the month). If NCAA rules prevent someone from the university giving a broadcaster something of value, then Jon Miller or someone from this august group could serve as bagman. The stipulation would be that any winnings be given to charity, which I'm guessing Dakich would be eager to do.
This could be a win-win-win for everyone:
- Hawkeye fans shed a bit of their image as whining losers, eager to blame referees, sports broadcasters, media or just about anyone else for any shortcomings of their sports programs. Handled properly, the national positive PR would be huge.
- The fans provide an olive branch to repair relations between Dakich, Fran, Woody and the Iowa fan base.
- A needy charity benefits from any winnings.
