Out of the portal comes Alavaro for a visit at this point., one of the 5 starters at Robert Morris that entered the portal after making the NCAA tourney this year.

6'9" forward, Horizon League POY, from Spain, 2 years of eligibility left

Also visiting Providence and Villanova

I guess we no longer have to wonder what BM and staff have been doing.

With this lad and Travin, we might be getting the power in the paint

Not seeing much news on Alvaro.

He evidently visited Kentucky a week or so ago and it was decided, maybe by UK, he wasn't a fit there.

Saw a headline saying he was going to visit Iowa but nothing in the last week.

Best thing about Alvaro? He's 6"9".

One of the things I'm noticing in the portal is that there are lots of guards and wings but not so many bigs, especially quality bigs.

The next few picks will be very important and that may be why Ben is taking his time and focusing his energy on the last openings he has. Gonna need some big boys to be under the basket to defend and rebound.

I always enjoy watching his movies.

Let's see if this link to Alvaro's highlights works.

I really like the way he knows how to break toward the open lanes to the basket so his players can get him the ball. He also appears to be very aggressive taking the ball to the hoop.

Glad to hear some portal news finally.

He's the 73rd rated prospect for the 2026 NBA draft. It's gonna take a lot of money to reel him in.

Good thing we have a lot of money.
Beth must have went home and broke open her piggy bank. Que Duke of Earl posting a video of a piggy bank getting broke open..........................

I can't help but wonder if losing Toolson opened up a little extra money for Alvaro?

If this kid is Italian then he may know how to cook. He may be good at dishing things out and make some slamming good presentations.

At what point do we start discussing our upcoming starting line up vs last years? I think what we have in play right now would compete pretty well already.
I believe the starting five is already in the 9 schollie players we have committed. From here, I suspect we look for depth, projects, and affordable pieces. I am fairly blown away at what appears to be some pretty aggressive NIL spending by Iowa. It seems that the money guys were there all along, they just needed a change at the HC?

This team has a chance to be really good.

I feel like getting Alvaro might be our best portal pick up other than maybe the PG.

This really solidifies our frontcourt, IMO.

Frontcourt:
Jirak - 6'11 - and, yes, as a freshman may not be physically ready to bang with the bigs but you can't ignore his height
Koch - 6'9"
Folgueira - 6'9"
Manyawu - 6'8"

And, maybe we can reel another big or two.

Alvaro is from Malaga, Spain which is right on the southern Mediterranean coast. He attended the DME Academy in Florida for his prep ball.

Our roster now starting to look pretty good.

247 ranks it as the #4 portal team in the country. I think that has to do with sheer volume, but again, a lot of schools are turning over their entire roster right now.

Do we know roughly how much they are spending?

I think one aspect that is slightly overlooked is how good Drake might have been next year. They were likely bringing the same core back. And while some of those kids had already played together at NW MO St, last year was really year 1 for that group (several players from other schools, Howard was a freshman, etc).

Given how system-oriented the program is, I don't think it is unreasonable to consider that Drake might have made a jump in year 2. It would have been another year of playing together in the system, plus they were battle-tested from a couple games on the big stage at the NCAA tourney (and you know they'd study the hell out of that fairly well contested loss to Texas Tech, which increasingly looks like one of the elite teams from last season).

The point is another year of Drake's core improving together might have been a pretty damn good team in of itself. Maybe a sweet 16 team.

And now you add the Horizon League player of the year, a double digit scorer and highly efficient 3 point shooter from Kansas State/Villanova, and a versatile 4 star recruit who already has a year of seasoning at Iowa.

I'm pretty damn bullish on this roster.
