You know people initially were excited about Lick when he came in. The thought process evolved around what an upgrade Iowa would be over the small program that Butler came from.

If Lick could do well at Butler, surely he would do gang busters at a bigger program like Iowa. Surely he would get even better recruits.

Lick had trouble recruiting B1Gs and his offense was boring to watch. Lick was the precursor to Fran. We were so happy to have someone “Fran” that wouldn’t put you to sleep watching the game.

I think Lick and.Brian should stick to something more their speed, like watching paint dry.

To your point though about How some of Lickliters best players left his team’s. I can’t help but wonder if it had more to do with Lick’s personality more than anything else?

I don’t think personality will be a factor.with Ben. Ben appears to be well liked by players and coaches.

I still scratch my head over the low turnouts at the Iowa Men’s basketball games. Is the economy effecting the way people spend their money in Iowa? I mean there’s a big gap between going to a Lickliter coached basketball game and a Fran coached basketball team. Lick and Fran seem to be polar opposites. One couldn’t coach offense and the other struggled with defense.

I expect to see a more moderate type of basketball under Ben. A team with balanced scoring and defense. Will that turn out to be more effective? The truth is none of us know at this point. Expectation’s were also high when Alford came to Iowa City. One of the biggest gripes about Alford was in ineptitude in March. Hummm, why does that sound familiar? Also with Steve people didn’t seem to care too much for his personality.

As far as personality goes I have to give that award to Mr. Davis Davis. Tom had a likable personality.

I guess this fall we will see what Ben is going to be about.

Perhaps a little homework would have revealed the value of Brad Stevens

After Matta left Butler following the 2000–01 season, new head coach Todd Lickliter promoted Stevens to a full-time assistant coach. Under Lickliter, Stevens was active in every aspect of the game: skills instruction, game preparation, in-game coaching, and recruiting. Butler was 131–61 during Stevens' time as an assistant coach

I think we would be foolish to deny that the explosive success by the Iowa women has impacted the men’s crowds. I wonder how many fans added the relatively inexpensive women’s season tickets to their existing men’s tickets? Then the pick and choose game begins. I would add that late starts of midweek games, maybe older fans no longer able to attend consistently, the elusive impact of apathy, and a couple of years of downturn in wins, may suggest the perfect storm, loss of attendance.

Lack of student involvement is a well recognized issue. We do need to remember that when classes don’t meet, kids go home. I will continue to wonder if fans are frustrated with the high turnover on the rosters. Fans unable to follow players for three or four years, and watch their development, many of whom are local heroes, must have an impact. Think Ronnie Lester, Chris Street, Matt Gatens, Luka, and many others.

Now we need to get behind our new coach and a ton of unknown players…
This whole thing could be very damaging to college sports except for die hard NBA and NFL fan's who watch college sports thinking this guy or that guy would look good on my pro team. It is always fun to watch a unheralded player make it big. That was fun watching a Hawkeye player score a TD on an interception in the Superbowl. That's not something you see every day.

I can envision the AD's and University Presidents eventually getting together and making some basic ground rules for the sake of the sport.

You make a great point about watching a kid join a school and watching them progress through the years. That still could happen but if all things evolve around money it will a less and lesser thing witnessed moving forward. You will lose fan's.

Are you one of these people that think that Barta should have recognized that Brad Stevens was the Theo Epstein of basketball?

Do you think Barta should have recognized what Danny Ainge saw, and everyone else missed, outside of the Butler program?
Having Barta gone only improves Iowa Hawkeye Sports.

Excellent, excellent point sir. Did Lickliter end up coaching in the NBA? I am joking, I am joking. Seriously though is he still coaching or parking cars somewhere?
