A lot of people are blaming the coaches....

tehb, are you wearing a red headband right now? you can be honest, no one will laffy at you

Everything that happens on that field is on the coaches. PERIOD.

He's the CEO of this program, he doesn't do everything himself, but he makes sure that everything gets done to put this team in a position to win.

If an assistant coach didn't pull his weight by having his players prepared, fire him and hire someone who will do the job.

If a player isn't good enough to play, it's the coaches fault for not recruiting someone better. DON'T BLAME THE PLAYER!

When he was successful he got the credit with a giant contract. I was his biggest fan but if you give him credit for the good years you also have to hold him responsible for crapping the bed and allowing this program to become the horrible team that they've become.

Vandenberg is quickly erasing what numbers he put up last year. He is going to go down as one of the most disappointing QB's in Iowa history.
If losing to CMU at home doesn't do it what will get Rudock into the game to get experience for next year?

The same thing was being said about McNutt and Arvell Nelson. You know why neither guy was coming in? Because it was starting to get evident that Ricky Stanzi was better than them both.

Cue CJ Beathard.

BULLS-EFFING-EYE.
great post, gh.

I will do no defending of Vandy, but when Freak can sit in the south endzone and only half pay attention while she is rubbing more sunscreen on her husband's head, and still know exactly what is coming and the coaches don't seem to get it, then something is seriously wrong.

WOW is right! If you only knew how close you were in your "observation"....although, I rubbed his head with sunscreen last week...This week...nah. This is the first time I've been on since shortly after the game and the first thread I read has a comment with me in it!!

So, did anybody see the Tevaun Smith redshirt burning happening this weekend? On a team where we've played:

Davis
KMM
Cotton
Shumpert
Staggs
Hillyer

I think he may have even had a pass thrown his way but it was in hands and either dropped or knocked away, so I'm assuming he'll be shut down for the year.

I think I heard Nate Meier's shirt was burned as well.

Yeah, he had a huge hit on a kickoff return in the 2nd half.

I was a huge Ferentz supporter as well, but this last game and these past 3 seasons going back to 2010 make me wonder how this old fuddy duddy can be the coach at a Big Ten school. To stand there clapping when Central Mich made that field goal is downright embarrassing. I'm so sick of seeing him chomp his gum and twirl his hands every time the defense gets torched. The clock management is atrocious for a 14 year head coach. It's completely unacceptable. Complacency has taken over the program and that starts at the top. And as the saying goes, complacency breeds mediocrity. It's a tough pill to swallow, but I feel with this staff that is all we are going to be: mediocre. The same mistakes year in and year out have showed us the inability to change. It's depressing more than anything. Ferentz may be a great man, but I'm afraid he is not a great coach.

The coaches are set in their errant and ineffective ways (I don't need to rehash all of that here,) and Jake Vandensherman is a case study in stunted development followed by almost comedic devolution.

From the instant the play is received in the huddle, Jake Vandensherman knows exactly who he's gonna throw it to, come hell or highwater or triple coverage. And if you're looking for some touch on the ball, look somewhere else, pal. That sucker's coming in at maximum velocity 100% of the time.

A program that is worth it's salt has players that can step in when the starters fizzle. Our obvious lack of any type of backup quarterback through the years is all you need to know about this coaching staff.

And they do deserve some play...but Vandenberg is incredibly disappointing to me....a 5th year senior reads the blitz and knows that KMM is going to be WIDE OPEN for a touchdown...but he just doesn't get it.

Not to mention the fact that when our receivers do get a chance to catch the ball they have to make spectacular diving catches...Allowing for no yards after catch.

It's just pathetic.

That all sounds like a team that's wasn't ready to play. Sounds like the coaches deserve a lot of blame.

Not to mention the guys RUNNING AWAY from the ball on the onside kick....someone just fall on the dang thing!!

I have to get emotionally removed from Hawkeye sports....this game has just dampened my weekend...I have sat around stewing about it for hours...

The team wasn't ready to play. Sounds like the coaches job.

I feel terrible for James. For whatever reason he really has absolutely no composure or pocket pressense anymore and its getting worse every game in the Greg Davis system.

Im getting tired of seeing QBs coming in from highschool with the mentality of a winner and leaving Iowa terrified of making mistakes.

It is sad for James. His draft stock is dropping every game. If this keeps up he'll be lucky to get taken in the 7th round.

And I think that is just how these coaches teach, don't screw up, don't screw up, don't screw up, even if that means being below average Qb don't screw up. It has happened to many times where Iowa QB's get worse as they get older.

Yes, JVB has struggled this season, but he struggled last season as well this is nothing new. His numbers from last year were fluff never gets it done when it matters great person, average QB.

Lucky to get taken in the 7th round? I think it would be anything less than a miracle at this point if he's signed as a free agent.

JVB will not play in the NFL even if he has a great rest of the year. I think his ability to read defenses is poor and he is very susceptible to the blitz. I also think the coaches are getting way too much heat. I think they were ready to play. I mean they scored on the first drive in a just a few minutes and I think they get the players in the right position to succeed. Besides the last few minutes of regulation the defense had made some good adjustments and held them scoreless in the 2nd half. Bottom line is someone needs to make a play. Offense wasn't the big problem this week but defense was. Too many missed tackles and missed assignments didn't help.

I am not in the know about the offense and what JVB is checking out of or into. From what I have read our new offense does rely on the players to make reads and adjust routes. Why would our players be running routes short of the first down markers on 3rd and 6? Why is JVB throwing to the routes short of the first down marker? Is it coaching or just players making the wrong decision? Is it both I don't know. What I do know is we have a chance to start the conference season against a team we have lost to the last two years and it is a trophy game. If the team is not ready or pumped up then to me it seems they have checked out and no amount of coaching will get it back. A friend of mine who is around the program alot told me a few years ago there was a big entitlement problem with the upper classmen and the coaches were anxious for them to move on. If someone is not interested in being coached then they won't be regardless of who is coaching them. The question is how do the coaches get rid of that state of mind? Maybe hitting bottom is exactly what they need.
