A great year

Under Hayden we defended our #1 ranking over a #2 Michigan team (amongst others). Who has KF defended our #3 ranking over? I guess my point is that once we are on top, KF is notorious for throwing us off the proverbial cliff. See 2015 B1G championship game and/or 2016 Rose Bowl game. 2009 Shoe. Etc.

It's kind of like the 1996 season, losing to Tulsa, but being 9-3 with a bowl win, a win at Happy Valley and a domination of Wisconsin and some freshman phenom named Ron Dayne. Or even three years ago, beating Michigan and Nebraska to peak at the end of the year, but having lost to Northern Illinois (granted coming off a BCS game and with a Heisman contender at QB) in the season opener. Probably got a shot in a bowl a bit above our actual talent against LSU, though we kept it close. If we play USC, Colorado, or Washington State like I'm seeing projected, I don't think we can slow them down enough to win, but never know which team shows up more motivated in the smaller bowls.

The Tulsa game was at least on the road. Was that the "shoe" game?

Great finish but a good year....nothing wrong with that. Given expectations, a bit disappointing sure...but we were one win away from defending our Big Ten West title (Wisconsin) can't be too upset with that.

If we would have tanked I would be mad, but I can't be too upset with 8 wins...unless you're OSU or Bama...that's dangerous (ask Nebraska fired Solich...never been back...)

You're forgetting about the implosion of the recruiting class. It's okay. Apologists are known for distorting reality.

1st quarter: C+(meh against Miami, beat down of ISU, disappointment against NDSU)

2nd quarter: C (2 ugly road wins and another disappointing loss)

3rd quarter: D+ (ok road win, boring loss, and embarrassing blowout)

4th quarter: A+ (top 5 win, shutout, and top 25 blowout win)

Overall C+with chance to raise the grade in a bowl game to a B

I would say this is a pretty good assessment and it reflects a comment I made on another thread that 9-4 is very respectable but 8-5 is very mediocre. When people start thinking 8-5 is a great year or really good season then maybe they should think about buying Iowa State gear.

Hello pretender
Look at my signature
Now back to yours
Now back at mine
Now back to yours
Now back at mine
Sadly, your signature isn't as awesome as mine
But if you stopped using lady scented logic
Then your signature could be as awesome as mine
Look down
Look up
Where are you?
You're on a boat
With the post your post could smell like
What's in your hand?
Back at me
It's an oyster
With two tickets to an Iowa bowl game
Look again
The tickets are now diamonds
Anything is possible when your goal is to be as awesome as JB

2000 was the last time the Clowns won 8 games? Well that was ONLY 16 years ago. They are worse than I thought.

JB i do like your points in your sig. There have been comparisons to Fry and KF on here earlier in the season. Some truly believe KF is just as good as Fry, if not better. I have 5 points I would like to make now that I was too lazy to make in those threads:

-HF had Iowa ranked #1 for several weeks (under KF #3 is our highest)
-HF completely OWNED ISU
-HF won the games he was supposed to win. KF loses a few he's supposed to win and maybe gets a win or two he shouldn't have
-HF coaches to win; KF coaches not to lose
-HF doesn't make excuses

Probably a few others but I think most all of us know HF>KF and always will be. The End.

<<HF doesn't make excuses>>

You obviously weren't around during the Hayden years.

Would agree with the OP... Really has been a fun year wins over ISU,Minnesota, Nebraska, and Michigan that is a good year!!! Go Hawks..

I will agree with your good catagory if that nine wins includes the bowl win. If the eight wins includes the bowl win not so much as that means a 7-5 regular season.

Sorry bob, That response was directed at dean's comment.

Not a problem.

And frankly, seven wins in some years (disregard bowl games) is better than in others. Seven wins in 2001 was damn near "ecstasy", whereas 7 wins in 2005, 2010 and 2011 stood as "disappointing". Eight wins in 2008 and 2016 are pretty similar, in "feel", based on the way we finished, the development after some type of controversy or beatdown, and the way we have seen both the overall defenses and rushing attacks perform late-season.

Nine wins in almost any year is a "good" season. But a "bad" bowl loss can temper the best of seasons, IMHO.

A bowl win will go a long way to a positive sentiment and possibly repairing some recruiting damage.

They are terrible. And people like you are dragging the Hawkeyes in their direction. You know who likes to crow about 8 wins?? Fans of crappy programs. Name the programs in the Big Ten that set their goal at 8 wins.

You and Greg Davis have something in common. Neither of you mind getting embarrassed.

except for 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2015, we are always inconsistent. I blame the coaches, am tired of losing to teams like W. Michigan, N. Dakota St and crappy ISU teams, then they will knock off a top 10 team and suddenly we need to forgive this staff and head coach for one or two big wins in one season. It's gotten really old. Plus, we haven't won the Big 10 in football in over 12 years and a bowl game victory since December 2010.

If only Denis the menace could understand your words.
