A dose of reality on the sudden Keno Davis obsession

First off, where the hell did this come from? No one even thought about Keno Davis, then out of the blue, Miller mentions his name and everybody is talking about the guy.

It won't happen.

It is not going to happen because he has a grudge with the university. Seriously, that is such an absurd idea on its head, I just have to ignore it.

It is not going to happen because:

1. Our current coach isn't going anywhere. I know after one tough loss, the message board has fully decided Lick sucks now. Luckily, we have smart people making the tough choices, not you guys. Lick isn't going anywhere.

2. Keno is not that good of a coach. Not in a "WE HAVE TO HAVE THIS GUY!" kind of way. He is 12-10 for the season, with bad loses to Iona and URI. His team is 11th in the Big East, and the only teams they have beaten in conference are the bottom feeders. They got crushed by 17 last night in Syracuse. And we are obsessing about him?

3. When the best reason is "His dad used to coach here", you have a bad argument.

4. No one is going to pack CHA to watch us score 70 but lose by 15. No one is going to pack CHA out of sentimentality for his father. No one is such a huge full court press enthusiast that they will buy season tciekts to watch it.

5. We could almost certainly find a better coach.


Now. Seriously. Get over the guy. It isn't gonna happen.

Although, you did a much better job than I ever could have.

That said, I don't think it was Jon who infused the Keno talk. There's been a lot of it on here by a lot people. I couldn't even begin to figure who opened that can of worms.

Forgot one of the biggest reasons--Providence to Iowa is a lateral move at best right now.
 
Thanks Ghost this was overdue.

Providence didn't beat a team from a major conference prior to Big East play and the only four Big East teams that they have beat are dead last (13-16th place). Maybe Keno will end up being a great coach in the future but we haven't seen enough to get overly excited.
 
And it's not like Keno rebuilt Drake...Mr. Davis did that before Keno took over when the program was headed in the right direction. I think we would need a proven coach who has rebuilt a D1 program. This will be a very tough job here, IMO.

First, I tend to agree that Lickliter is not going anywhere. I think he will at least have next year, too.

Next, I don't think that Keno holds a grudge against Iowa. I think that has been put to rest by his father. Keno also felt a great deal of love and support from Hawkeye fans two years ago, and that meant a lot to him. I know this because he told me. I also believe that his wife would like to return to the Midwest someday...as for the rest of the stuff, it's not worth speculating on because Todd is Iowa's coach.

I think I have said what I am going to say on the Lickliter/John's minutes/Todd's reaction on Monday aspect of the program. I will focus on the games from here on in and reserve my comments in that arena until the end of the year when it's time to take stock of things, like I do each year.

You beat me to this, Jon. Not that I know one way or the other whether Keno holds a grudge against Iowa. But when the OP comes out and boldly makes this statement as if it's common knowledge throughout the sporting world, I would wonder if that claim can be backed up, or if it's just the OP's opinion. I'm guessing it's the latter.

Whether Keno would be a good hire or not, is another topic. I tend to think that Keno isn't proven yet, and if his big year at Drake was the result of what his father had in place before Keno took over. The jury is still out.

Well he has a better record than us overall. His team as well is very young and inexperienced. He is in better conference standings than we are. What are we 10th out of 11. He is 11th out of 16. And they got beat 17 by the #4 rated team in the country. Is michigan rated? Cause weren't we down by 20+ in that game? I know the last time i looked it was 22-5!
3. When the best reason is "His dad used to coach here", you have a bad argument. I just thought he would of been a good option, he had success at Drake and he had providence on the "bubble" last year. He has proven he can coach teams and build them up, look what he did at Drake!

I am sorry but when I go watch JH teams score more points than the Hawkeyes, then you know that is sad! Winning games in the 40 or 50's does not put fans in the stands. If you can put up points and look impressive doing it, then the fans will come.

5. We could almost certainly find a better coach. This is the only point that I agree with you, yes there are better out there. BUT who wants to come to Iowa? Why would any coach at a BCS school come to Iowa. Lickliter and Alford have buried this program so far down, it will take at least 3 or 4yrs to build back up!

Ghost tends to state all of his opinions as facts. Just like the opinion that Lick is for sure coming back next year. I agree but i doubt anyone on this board as inside info into Lick's job security. Especially with half a big ten season left.

Ditto. I also think Lickliter will be back next year, but I am FAR less certain about a year 5.
 
After Marquette this weekend, Providence faces 4 top 8 teams in a row! That is just crazy. 3 of them are at home.

Syracuse was only their 2nd ranked opponent of the year. First one was #19 UCONN, which obviously shouldn't have been ranked.

I don't really care about the Keno situation, but I bet the Keno lovers will be back if they beat 1 or 2 of those top 8 teams.

No real purpose for this post, just saw their upcoming schedule and thought it was crazy. Big East is definitely top heavy for sure and not much else this year.
 
Good post. One other thing that has bothered me about "The Keno Talk" is that he has only had one good year at a mid major. Most of the people say we need an established big time coach if one is brought in.

If Keno were brought in and he struggled after one year we would immediately say that he was mid major coaching material. Who did Drake ever beat? They got outed in the first round of the tournament. Blah Blah Blah. I liked the one year of Drake success and they did have a good year. I'm just saying that if you looked at Lickliters credentials compared to Keno's you wouldn't even think twice about Keno.

I'm still in hope that Lickliter is the right man because we don't have a better option right now. If transfers happen then he must be gone immediately.

What I meant, and what I have felt all along, is that it is absurd to believe that Keno has a grudge against the university. Forgive my unexpected and temporary ambiguity.

The rest of my screed, as you have all pretty much figured out, is dead on correct and should be accepted as a universal truth.
