A Closer Look at Iowa Football's '22 Class

There are multiple ranking services out there and all of them are trying to rank a couple thousand kids based upon watching high school tape, offers, and guesswork, all done by people who weren't good enough to actually coach football, so they became recruiting experts. No shock that there is rarely a lot of consensus. X is a 5-star on several services and is probably the highest profile commit in the KF era. I seriously doubt any service actually says: "hey that kid committed to Iowa and not Notre Dame, guess he isn't a 5 star...."

I think I saw that this is Kirk's best class based on average star rating. It's 3.24 this year, last year was 3.21 and the 2005 class was 3.22. This was a great finish to this year's class.

It is and the only reason why the class isn't ranked higher is because they only have 17 commits while most teams are 20+.

But these rankings and stars are mostly for entertainment, I can't wait to see the results on the field.

I just saw that ESPN has this class ranked 44th and 12th in the B1G. Sounds about par for the course.

Which makes sense since they don't have Xavier as a 5 star and Iowa's class is small. Not a lot of difference between being 5th and being 12th IMO.

Looks like a great class. But...what about the offensive line? After last season I'd expect it to be a priority. I know we have something like 20 OL on the roster now...but I'll take quality over quantity.

My fingers are crossed they find a gem in the transfer portal.

I have to believe that the jury is out on the O line for 2022. Inexperience, injury, problems in the passing game contributed to a perfect storm. The run game faced 8 man fronts; the passing game, after teams stifled the run, allowed blitzes galore, which in turn disrupted routes as well as QB’s timing and vision. We also dropped a lot of passes. QB decision making lacked consistency. Our most talented receivers were inexperienced freshmen. I would love to simply conclude that our O Line was the problem. I just do not see it that way.

"The" problem....perhaps not. The biggest problem, I'd suggest yes.
