A bit too conservative toward the end

Kirk Ferentz wanted nothing to do with that 3-3-5 defense, late in the game with a 17 point lead.
I hope we will not see another alignment like that, though the Badgers may be close. I fully understand why an inexperienced O Line would struggle especially in the run game. Identifying who to block on the interior would be doable. But trying to identify second level blocks would be a nightmare. And ISU is a top level Defense both scheme and personnel.

If I remember right Wisconsin's 3-4-4 defense is based on the old late 1990's NFL 3-4-4 defense. A number of college teams gave the old NFL defense a try, most without success. I think getting and developing guys with the right physical attributes & skill sets was problematic for most college teams. Wisconsin excelled at it.

This game would have looked so much different if the OLine was solid enough to eat up the clock. They couldn't get the push they needed when the defense knew it was coming. The best Iowa OLines were good for 4 yards even if they told the defense where it was going. This line is no where near that.

Wisconsin doesn't do anything resembling a 3-3-5. A 3-3-5 trades a lineman for a DB, and a 3-4 trades a lineman for a linebacker. They may look similar on a chalk board but they're completely apples/oranges...

3-3-5 is a spread look that makes Matt Campbell look like a genius in the Big 8 but it doesn't translate into the B1G. Wisconsin's 3-4 is a vanilla cover 3 and they send their OLB a lot. With our passing game being a nil threat and our previous struggles against a 3-4, you're going to see the same Wisconsin D you always have since the Alvarez years.

Hate to tell you this but I'd take the 3-3-5 any fucking day of the week over Wisconsin's 3-4.

Phil was losing his mind toward the end too, i should've grab clips of him laying into the d backs
I bet he was pealing paint at halftime... First that long pass to get em down there and then on the TD ISU had their left tackle and guard both false started clear as day. They took both took 2 steps before qb snapped it.

The offensive line two deeps have two good & experienced players, Linderbaum & Ince. Schott, the only senior in the depth chart, is injured. Plum is a decent tackle with some experience. It's too early to tell how good Richman and DeJong are at tackle. Than you've got a bunch or inexperienced underclassmen after that. I think there's a decent chance they improve quit a bit.

I know they will get better.
Shooter will be back this week for some action. Hopefully he will be starting the following week.

They will get better because they have to get better.

A creative game plan will help much.Huuge help for Spencer also.

I expect the opposite. Iowa is going to do Iowa things and get both lines up to speed the next two games. That doesn't mean super conservative. They do need to get the receivers a good workout in both games.

Iowa also needs to get some north south running going with a decent serge from the offensive line. They don't really have an experienced power back right now to compliment Goodson.

Kyler Schott is required equipment for the B1G schedule.

When is he anticipated to return?
All Ferentz said in his presser last week was that he was out for ISU and they’d “see where he was at” for this week.

Kurt’s pressers are on Tuesday so I’m sure he’ll get asked about it again today.

Scratch that.

Just saw the Hawks have him listed on the latest depth chart for Kent State. Looks like he’s back.
