Sort of the response from Ferentz when questioned about the running game. Saw the same response from Kakert on an interview assuming he was referencing Ferentz response.
Are you buying that? A team that likely will struggle comes in with a ton of new players and coaches and that is the reason we couldn't run the ball? No film?
Have a hard time rationalizing a bad performance on that basis, but I guess we will find out Saturday. Got lots of film on them

Even if true it's an excuse. They weren't showing an 8 man box against us the whole time. It wasn't a numbers game. Our Oline doesn't create running lanes where the play is designed to go or get much of a push. It's just that simple. Unless you're outnumbered at the LOS there's no excuses. They've had nothing but excuses for going on 3 yrs now for why the running game has been less then good.

I was glad to see the Oline do well in pass pro that was a sight for sore eyes and will give Cade half a chance at succeeding. But the other half of that will be if they can run the ball better and make teams have to respect that. If not against the better defenses we'll see they'll struggle.

The way I see it is from what I heard on a podcast Utah State had two scrimmages closed to the public and there was not a great deal of opportunity to get any real film or even an idea of style of play. I could see that being an issue on the offensive side of the ball, however I don't feel that's the case. Over the last few season's our oline has gone up against one of the best dline's in the country yet somehow we continue to struggle. So while I feel that the lack of film could be an issue I think the issue is deeper then that and there really isn't much of a reason why our oline has struggled the way it does.

If our line performed well the past few years and one of those games where they simply didn't click or seemed lost I'd think that maybe a lack of film or limited knowledge of the defense could very well be the issue. Unfortunately based on what I've personally seen, to my naked eye, I would say our line play simply isn't good.

You can't get 3 yrds a carry against ...................UTAH STATE?! It was Utah St. for crying out loud. I mean weren't they pretty much 2nd for the number of transfer portal guys.

Now, sometimes these first games are very tricky such as SDSU in the past. These teams have all year to prepare for this first game and they really can focus on a solid game plan, instead of getting distracted by a next weeks game. I'll give P5 teams that. Add into that and Utah St. had years of game film to prepare for Iowa. In this situation, Iowa didn't really have squat and kind of going into the game blind, if you will.

But again, it was UTAH STATE, and Iowa should have still been able to power rush and out execute them.

To be fair, they only got 3.01923076923 yards per carry against everybody last year.
So, this all adds up, right?
They didn't know what to prepare for. So, just a .3 yards drop in rushing productivity. Heck, that's literally only 12 inches per carry. I mean.....just over the length of the ball itself. Maybe these refs were just spotting the ball off the front of the seams instead of the nose. I mean, that's all it would take over 20-30 carries to come up with that difference.

They could be a top 5 team. We just don't know at this point. My current top 5 is:

Duke
Iowa
Utah State
Clemson
