8 rides - 3 commits

The Hawks now have 8 rides to give between now and November, let's hope it doesn't linger to next spring.

2 open spots
Players leaving 2011 - Cully, Cole
Players leaving 2012 - Gatens, Brommer, Cartwright, Archie

Players committed 2011 Ogelsby, White
Players committed 2012 Meyer

Players by position 2011
C/PF Brommer/Archie
PF/SF Basabe/White/McCabe
SF/SG Marble/Gatens/Ogelsby/May
PG Cartwright

Players by position 2012
C/PF Meyer
PF/SF Basabe/White/McCabe
SF/SG Marble/May/Ogelsby
PG

Really shows how urgent 2011 recruiting has become. Don't want to go into 2012 with that lack of experienced players.

I think it is only six rides. Three rides this year & only three rides next year with Meyer's commitment.

I should have been more clear. I was counting open scholarships to be filled. This counts the slots Ogelsby, White, and Meyer are taking. That is why I said 3 commits in the topic heading.

Isn't it 9 scholly's and 3 commits. Don't we now have 5 this year and 4 next year that are open?

Re: 9 rides - 3 commits

Yep. It should be 9 and 3.

2011, 3 open, 2 committed (White, Ogelsby)
2012, 3 open, 1 committed (Meyer)

Crap, you are correct.

The more I look at this, the more it seems to me that the best scenario might be to again go JUCO (Jackson) with the PG and then go hard after a really strong 2012 Frosh. However, of course if it looks like you can get a better frosh right now than in Fall, you would have to go for it.

So did Brust and Larson. Sorry, but I don't count the player as a Hawkeye until they are on campus and taking classes.

True, but unless there is a coaching change (which there won't be) Ogelsby and White aren't getting let out of their LOI's and will be Hawks.

Yeah, it's totally semantics. But that's just the way I look at it. Heck, even some guys show up on campus and end up going back home. I just don't count the guy a Hawkeye until he is on the official roster as a player.

Technically, by NCAA rules, Iowa has ten scholarships to give for next year. The only two players Iowa has to give scholarships to are Ogelsby & White. Iowa does not have to renew the scholarship of any current player. Maybe, Fran wasn't going to renew Cully's scholarship. I doubt it, but it is a possibility!

As a result, McCaffery can sign up to ten players in the spring signing period beginning next week.

Clearly, Iowa has to get a pg this spring...probably a juco, but either or is fine.
Then,another next year.
Fran has a chance to put a big stamp on the program quickly with these 9 schollys plus Melsahn last year being ''pure'' Fran recruits. Bryce is also in there but he will be gone after next year.
I would almost prefer we get at least one juco this year so that in 2013 we have at least 2 schollys to give. 2012 is strong in Iowa, but weak in Illinois. 2013 is hopefully Jok and Agua ,but is also very strong in Illinois. Right now we only have one junior to be in Eric May...need at least one,if not two more rides that year. But,as we have seen, roster turnover is now a constant in college bb. At least with Cully,he was not an upperclassman...so we did not waste several years get him prepped up only to lose him, like Tony Freeman or Jake Kelly or Aaron Fuller...losing those juniors and seniors is brutal.

Every year you bring up the year to year deal on the scholarships, we get that.

We just assume everyone will be at Iowa for the duration of their career to simplify the scholarship situation. Unless someone transfers, we can assume the scholarships are good for 4-5 years depending on redshirting.

I hate being negative - but why does this have the feel of Iowa basketball being bad for another 10 years? I was excited this whole year - but the more I think about it, the harder it is for me to believe we can recruit top talent. I really hope Fran can do this. I just have a bad feeling for some reason.

So,Cully leaving has changed your mind on the future of Iowa bb under Fran?
Think positive.
We have brand new facilities opening this summer,a great salesman at the helm, and plenty of schollys to offer...that sounds like a perfect storm of opportunity for Iowa bb that has not existed since Raveling was here.

All I needed was a slap in the face - thanks! :D:D:D:D

If you ask the SEC, they wouldn't have to give a scholly to Ogelsby or White either;)
