8 days between games, welcomed rest

This 8 day stretch is much needed for Iowa before getting Drake at home (a game they should win).

Get Bryce healed up some more.

Iowa has played every three days since the start of the season, not much practice time at all.

Hopefully the staff can get the defensive woes figured out. Rebounding is improving, already. Also need to shoot about 500 treys per day from the guards. They also want to go back to the fundamentals of setting screens.

spank, what's your take on May. is it all between the ears? seems like Fran has repeatedly said that May has a green light to shoot, but he still seems so lost out there and hesitant.

i'm sure having bryce back will help, but how much really? do you feel like we can still win a couple big 10 games?

Glad you mentioned our screen game on offense. It's been pretty pathetic. A combination of poor positioning by the screeners and poorly getting up the screens by the dribblers. It's been another thing this team does that has been hard to watch.

how many moving screens have we been called for this year? seems like brommer and mccabe are good for at least two per game.

May is a momentum player - both bad and good momentum. At this point in his career, I can't see that changing.

Hard time saying how many B1G wins, the league is actually better than I expected it would be. I don't know that Iowa will be a favorite in more than 2 or 3 of them, even that is a reach at this point. I honestly think the team is better than they have played, but they just can't get it clicking. Shooting has been bad. Missed bunnies, etc... But Mel is more aggressive and looks a lot better, if McCabe can stay out of foul trouble he brings a lot, and Marble is turning into Iowa's best player as of late.

A lot of things to build on, but Iowa is still a ways away. They aren't yet to the level I had hoped at this point in the season. However, I still see them sneaking up and knocking off a couple big guys inside Carver at some point this season... it happens.

Spank-

Marble does have a nice floor game. He is not a lightning quick guy but I think his length takes people by surprise. He can take such long steps and just sneak past a guy. He has a knack for scoring that Matt and Eric just don't have because they don't handle the ball quite as well as Marble.

I hate Marble at the point only because I don't think he is a great facilitator. He gets the job done but I would prefer to have Bryce starting at the point as he looks to pass a bit more and I think Marble would be best suited starting at the 2 or 3 so the offense is not so stagnent. Bryce can run some sets and eventually get the ball to Marble to score.

I think Iowa has a big win at home but I don't know who it will be against. I just want to see Iowa play some teams tough on the road. Heck I don't need a lot of wins but want to see them play a full, hard and smart 40 minutes at least.

The lack of quickness and athleticism on this team is truly alarming.

Until the level of talent improves, we cannot compete.

Hopefully this year's class is a start.

Agree. I can't believe people are still thinking this team is significantly better than what they've shown. The talent level on this team is brutal, and they have seemed to regress from last year. 10 wins is going to be a challenge.

If people just watch some ESPN games on saturday afternoons, the talent difference is striking. Our bigs are not quick-twitch guys (well Archie is but he is terrible at basketball). Our guards are slow.

Most problematically, however, we only have two players on the entire team that change directions with the ball on the dribble (Cartwright and Marble). Most teams have 5 or 6 guys. May is so bad with ballhandling and shooting, he's virtually useless. Gatens has decent ballhandling and shot creating skills, but so little explosion/length it doesn't matter.

Until we have a few guys that can just go one-on-one and beat their man with some level of consistency, we're never going to win much.
