Player to Watch: Aaron White

While balance will be a huge asset for the Hawkeyes this season, every team needs a go-to option or someone who can catch fire and carry the team offensively when they struggle. *Last season, Gatens was that guy more times than not but this year that role shifts over to White who also led the team in rebounding. *He is not the lights out shooter that Gatens was but is capable of making things happen on his own.

Only 2 spots ahead of Illinois? I can tolerate the fact he misspelled players names, and said May was a solid contributor last year, but ranking us that close to Illinois????

I am not sure White is the go to guy. He brings a lot to the table, but I think the go to guy could be different each night depending on who is guarding each player. Clearly each of our players have scoring ability especially the upper class men. May, Marble, McCabe and Basabe each has the potential to put twenty points on the board every game if they are given an advantage against the player guarding them. Obviously you could through White into that category also.

With Gatens now gone I expect Oglesby to shoot a lot more from the outside and to hit the mark on a much more consistant basis. Mike Gesell will surprise teams with his all around ability to shoot it deep, pump fake and then penitrate for the short jumper or pass to the open man under the basket or standing open for a three pointer. Woodbury and Oleseni will be are guardians and intimidators under our defensive basket and be a good enough scorer at the post to free up space for our guards and forwards. Clemmons will be our defensive specialist creating turnovers and taking it the distance and having the ability to finish at the hoop or passing it to White or Basabe for a rim rattling slam dunk.

I hope I spelled everyone's name right as I was going by memory. I am ready for game time. Go HAWKS Go!!!

I expect Marble to be the go-to guy and, from his interview today, Fran agrees with me. The fact that a national publication thinks another player could be the GTG encourages me that we're already going into the season underrated.

Our GTG is going to be a balance this season. That is where I think this team will take a jump up. We will not have to rely on any one player. We do not have to worry about that any longer. We have multiple guys that can be our GTG on any given night. Like BigD said, it will depend on who is guarding who. Defenses will have to look at most of our players. We have balance and a lot more players that can score. This will be fun to watch.... When is tip off?!

If I had to pick one person to be the mainstay night after night, Marble is my vote on our GTG most nights. He has the ability to score from anywhere on the court. Much more so than Gatens. He just needs that shot to fall, consistently.

I would like Marble to be the go to guy, but Aaron seems like the more consistent guy to convert in crunch time. Now that RDM doesn't have to pull PG duty, he might develop that consistency. Just up till now, I would have felt more confident with the ball in White's hands with one basket needed.

A good comparison would be Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, although Gay should be the guy in crunch time, it seems like Randolph's craftiness around the rim and ability to get to the line are a better option. Now, if Gay could hit the 10-15 foot pull up jumper automatically, which, like RDM should always be there for him, things would be different.

It's a sports blog and a coach prone to hyperbole. Don't put too much stock in either.

I do believe that the go to guy is the one who receives the pass for a slam on the transition game......

Fran and the Hawks are getting a bit of attention. and the season hasn't even started.....

Never forget that when Aaron perfects his three, he will bear resemblance to Sophomore Larry Bird at Indiana State......

Simply mild conjecture, and nothing else. Please don't make too big a deal of it and have a heart attack.....

I agree with you Jack. Once White can consistently hit the three pt shot, he is going to be a nightmare to stop. Marble is in the same category, imo, as they both have so many things they do extremely well on the offensive end of the court. Then you throw in guys around them who can put 20+ points on the board at any time, makes the team extremely hard to defend/stop.
