We are within the 30 day mark. With the state fair starting this week it really brings home the fact that football is getting really close!

Each week I will start a new topic and we can discuss until it's time for the season to start.

Week 1: Brew/drink of choice at the tailgate...done
Week 2: Best menu item...done
Week 3: Tailgate setup...done
Week 4: Tailgate spots...done
Week 5: Tailgate arrival time
Week 6: Tailgate games
Week 7: Best Tailgate moment/memory
Week 8: Best game day/Melrose/Kinnick experiences/stories

Tailgate arrival times...

This one is pretty straight forward. When do you arrive for tailgating?

For 11:00 and 2:30 games we get to the lot when it opens at 7:00. I would get there sooner but there is no reason to get there and sit in the car on the street until it opens. For night games, we hold off for a little bit. We get there around 10:00. Sure, it's not 7:00, but getting there at 10:00 still gives you nine hours of tailgating!

For 11:00 A.M. games I get to Myrtle at 6:00 A.M. so I usually will get a spot because they are not good games. For 2:30 P.M. not named Iowa State I can usually find a spot at 7:30 A.M. For a night games I either don't bother with Myrtle or park at 7:00 P.M. the night before. Last year was the first time I parked overnight at Myrtle.

Last year for the Michigan game I went down the Friday before and end up sleeping in my car. It was kind of insane. Also very cold. I brought A LOT of blankets. But I got a spot. This year I am contemplating doing that for the Iowa State game. But may chicken out and park somewhere else on Saturday. Also I will drive down Friday night for the PSU game but will have a ride back to my house which is about 90 min. away.

Speaking of arrival times, I wonder if they are going to have the construction on 1st Ave./Hayden Fry Way done by Sept. 4. If not, game day traffic will be worse than usual. I graduated from Iowa five years ago and that street seems to have been in construction during my time at Iowa and since that time.

Go Hawks!

My Uncle shows up on Friday night around 7-8 at parks the RV. All of us then show up between 7-8 for breakfast and some Bloody Marys

Good times

For ANY game, there is but one rule: get there as early as you can! If your spot ain't open, crack one (or a few) roadside and wait until it IS open...

Around 6am regardless of the game time.Don't you love those guys that put out orange cones for 4-5 parking spots, I just get out of my car and move the cone and take the spot.

We almost always leave our kids at my parent's farm when we go to a game. It's more fun for us, more fun for the kids, and my Mom gets to Grandma them all day! It's about an hour from the farm to IC. Over the years I have figured out how to work it so I see almost no traffic.

Example - 11:05 game
Get up, have a great breakfast on the farm; leave at about 9:30; roll into IC at 10:35-10:40; the drive to the parking lot is like school's out of session, hardly a car on the road; hop the bus to Kinnick; walk in and sit down just in time for kickoff. Perfect!

We leave DSM about 4:00am no matter what the game time is. We are parked and partying about 5:45-6:00am whether it's Myrtle or the Library lot. Nothing better than that first cold one of the season while raising the black "I" and Tigerhawk flags.

Get up. Take off Hawkeye jammies, put on Hawkeye Tshirt, blue Jeans. Exit house, walk to game. Turn into drive way by the Big *** turkey leg guy. Drink beer by 0800.
