Trevor Trout is a cerebral football player. That helps him on and off the field. He talks with HN about how he tackles recruiting, his feelings on the Hawkeyes and the future for friend, Tyler Cook:

FWIW...Iowa had been backing off.

I pause when I hear that most times. It's a convenient narrative for schools to say that when eliminated.

However, that could be the case here. Linderbaum already is in the fold and Williams seems like a good bet to join him.

Who is Williams?

Don't know. There are reports the kid wasn't taking any coaching down at the Rivals camp in St. Louis this past weekend. Supposedly he was asked to show something other than a bull rush and he wouldn't do it or refused to.

I think part of recruiting is gauging where you sit with a kid. You only have so much time with NCAA rules and resources to dedicate to recruiting guys. Makes no sense to continue if you're not feeling it. Better to put your eggs in a different basket.

I was really hoping to tap into the St. Louis connection, but I would not be disappointed with Linderbaum and Williams. Athletic DT with quick first step which seems to fit the mold of Iowa Defensive Tackles.

I never thought we had a chance with Trout. Losing N Shannon hurts more imo. A dl class of Linderbaum, Williams, Waggoner and Daniel Parker jr would be fine. I don't understand why Williams doesn't have a better offer list.

So we backed off after he rejected Iowa. LOL.

No big deal. The D-line is gonna be fine in the immediate future.

No. Per a source, Iowa backed off BEFORE he eliminated the Hawkeyes. He did have Iowa in his Top 19 on May 10.

So, as I wrote, while I sometimes find these claims an attempt to control the narrative, I'm giving it validity here.

The guy has a top 19 list which is little bit ridiculous. I look at the names on the list and I'm assuming he's hoping to end up at a place like Alabama, USC, Penn State, LSU ect. There would be a lot of cracks for him to fall through before he'd even get to the fall back options of Minnesota, Illinois, and Missouri. If this was a top 20 list, Iowa would probably be a fall back option. The Iowa coaching staff might feel like he would be worth the effort if they were only competing with a couple of those high end names along with the fall back options. However, there are a half dozen names on that list that are bigger fish than Iowa and another 2-3 or so you could argue are bigger fish. My guess is he'd have to get in trouble to not end up at Alabama, USC, Penn State, LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia, or Miami. Realistically, it's probably not worth the coaches time.

"top 19". No way I could handle recruiting these kids. Top 19....lol. This just struck me as hilarious.

Even a top 10 is kind of silly and is probably more for attention. There's no way someone is genuinely considering 10 different schools. It would make recruiting a little easier for the coaches if recruits would eliminate schools earlier. That's not the case with Trout I'm just talking about in general.
