4 B1G teams get the previous week off

That is right! Half of the B1G games Iowa plays will be against teams who have the previous week off to prepare.

10/18 Maryland
11/1 NW
11/8 MN
11/15 IL

That seems like a statistical anomoly to me... At least we get the NW game with the same week off before-hand.

I am sure someone posted this back when the schedules came out, but I am just now noticing. Man, that seems to make it an uphill climb.

An extra week to prepare is nice but they can also come out rusty and sleepwalk through the first half.

Yea it is what it is... Maybe it's the football gods way of trying to make the schedule tougher since the teams on their face value aren't as tough. That Maryland game and Pitt game worry me as of today the most. NW without a running qb doesn't so much and I suppose that'll come to burn me... Oh well first things first gotta stop UNIs stud RB. That guy will be in the NFL next year.

didn't iowa have this exact thing happen in the past few years, except it was a bunch of good teams?

who does iowa have a after a bye week?

Oh, idk about that...

He's a stud, yes, but there's a big difference between NFL defenses and ISU's defense.

That said, I wish Iowa would have pulled the trigger back when they were showing interest in him. I wouldn't mind seeing him in black & gold.

The timing of the last three could be of some concern. Would love to see that stats for November games after opponent's bye weeks. The mitigating factor here is we get NW after our bye as well. Good thing we are not playing Sparty in the regular season this year...

Well, we also have a BYE before the Pitt and NW games. Ok, we play ISU before the Pitt game, but it's kind of like a BYE week. Especially now that they have been talking crap about Scherffs weightlifting feats. Why would you do that? Why would you get Brandon Scherff any more jacked up than he will be. He's going to make some people pay dearly for some saying that straps were the reason he was able to do that.

Actually, we do have a BYE before NW...and if you were to ask me, that's the one I would want the BYE in front of...just to get guys healthy.

How hard is it to prepare for Iowa, really?
If a team needs 2 weeks to prepare for Iowa, then there is probably a really poor coaching staff in place.
So, it shouldnt affect the games that much.
The only advantage is the said healing of players.

An extra week off generally means that they are more rested not necessarily better prepared. The first week the coaches go on recruiting trips or visit with family. Then the second week they get to practice for the team they are going to play. The players get more time for film and school work. The point is they don't always get to prepare a whole two weeks for their next opponent.

I'm sure someone has stat on how Iowa does against opponents who have had a bye week before they played Iowa. I imagine Iowa holds their own

In my opinion, an extra week to scout Iowa doesn't really do anyone any good--see various bowl games. They already know what we are going to run. Iowa bases its success on better execution than its opponents, not unusual schemes.

However, I think an extra week of healing does make a difference and, therefore, all these opponents coming off of bye weeks is definitely a net negative for Iowa.

Or, they can heal up and get healthier.

Yep. I'd suggest that the later the bye comes, the more beneficial it is for a team. They get to rest up, recover from lingering injuries and they have a much bigger book on the opposition that they can use to prepare.

As for the psyche, it varies from team to team. An Illinois, for example, could be flat if they're 2-5 and down...or they could fire up and regroup for a chance at the upset. You never know. I'd have to think that Minnesota and NW would really focus on us...given history.

I hope ABC has the "pancake cam" focused in on Scherff for the ISU game. That should be some fun highlights to watch. Maybe they can also strap a helmet cam to the ISU defensive end's helmet and we can see him looking up at the sun all day. I want to see a lot of runs to the left during that game.

Yeah right. Morrissey is going to destroy scherff.

Iowa's 2 byes last year really worked out well for Iowa. Better than any year I can remember.Against OSU in October, Iowa unveiled a 3-TE set that had the OSU defense befuddled.

But it was the bye the week before the Michigan game that worked out great. The week of Iowa's bye Michigan had to go to NW and play in the rain a game that went to OT, then a week later it turned super cold for mid-November. When Michigan came out in the 2nd half against Iowa, it was like they had nothing left in the gas tank and Iowa completely dominated Michigan in the 2nd half in the cold.

So in conclusion, normally a bye is not a big advantage unless the team with the bye is playing at home against a team that has to play 2 road games in a row, both in bad weather.

I recall in 2008 a number of teams who were hot or undefeated came off bye weeks only to lose. Most notably Penn State at Iowa.
