30 for 30: I Hate Christian Laettner

I hate him so much, I am refusing to watch this. They think they can manipulate people's irrational hate to get them to watch the show, and then try to convince you he's not such a bad guy. No thank you. I am not one of your sheep, ESPN.

I'm going to watch. Sounds interesting to me. Laettner was successful as part of a team. They had a lot of stars but if Christian Laettner had to be the leader of those teams they wouldn't have achieved nearly as much. Grant Hill led that team. I doubt they'll say much about Laettners pro career but it's safe to say he was one of many misses the Timberwolves have had in drafting players.

Laettner was the unquestioned leader of that team. This article from last June shows how Hill still defers to Laettner.

"Christian was like Paul McCartney," Hill said, laughing as he references The Beatles. "I was like Ringo (Starr), I guess. I was just happy to be part of the band, playing the drums. Actually, come to think of it, I was probably more like a roadie."

I don't like Laettner but I don't hate him. I won't watch it tomorrow night but I'm sure I will catch it some time.

Who didn't hate pretty boy. He could back up most of his swagger at the college level. Would of loved seeing him in practices when he was on the Dream Team eating his lunch everyday.

Laettner has even said that the difference between the Duke team that got throttled by UNLV in 1990 and the 1991 Duke team that beat UNLV was Grant Hill.

Laettner was a better college basketball player only in the sense that he was a media lightning rod because he was such a *****. Hill in turn was classy. In terms of basketball skills, Hill is superior to Laettner at every turn. Hill proved this by being a 7 time NBA All Star and 5 time All NBA 2nd team selection. He was a better player in 2012 at age 40 on a crushed ankle than Laettner was at the height of his NBA career.

Comparing these two as basketball players is laughable.

The point brought up in the post I responded to was whether Laettner was the leader of the team. I believe he was.

Now, for college statistics, you may be surprised. Laettner with more points (per 40 min) 24.3 vs 19.6, more rebounds 11.4 vs 7.9, more steals 2.4 vs 2.2, blocks equal (1.4), Hill with more assists 4.7 vs 2.7. As Mike said, Laettner was one of the more productive college players ever.

In the pros, there is no doubt who the better player was.

Those bums got lucky, 2 halves like the second and Iowa would have one going away. Acie Earl outplayed him big time.

heard a story about him. He met his roommate for the first time and punched him in the face the very first thing.

Using pro stats in an argument about who is the better college player is pointless. A Christian Laettner led team never lost a second round game like Hill's team did the year after Laettner left.

Laettner was ahead of his time, he would be a prototypical stretch four nowadays. He shot 55% from 3 on nearly 100 attempts as a senior.

I'm not arguing who was a better college player. I'm arguing who is a better basketball player period. Duke never wins those championships in 1991 & 1992 without Hill. He was their best and most athletic player who could play & guard 4 positions well. They needed him to beat the the UNLV/Kansas/Indiana/Michigan type teams. Hill & Duke did have an early exit in 1993 tournament. Of course the next year, Hill's SR season, he carried Duke to the National Championship game against Arkansas and lost on Scotty Thurman's rainbow 3.

I hate Jeff Zimmerman more than any player in college history. If I'd every met him personally I'd punch him in the mouth.

There probably isn't anyone on this board who can tell me who Zimmerman played for or what he did.

No idea, you coulda just told us. My all time hate is Jared Homan. I'm sure most here know who he is and why I hate him.

Well you're missing the point of this thread then. And Hill proved he couldn't win one without Laettner either.
