3 Weeks Until Kickoff

I chastised Norwalk in the "4 weeks" thread, then realized I am an idiot for "expecting" someone else to do all the work.

So, NOT to hijack Norwalk, but instead assist, the 3-week theme this week--until, of course, Norwalk says otherwise and changes it (his option)--is in 3 parts.

1) What preparation(s) are you making for game-day "celebrations" this season, whether you go to Kinnick or watch on TV? (Examples: getting out the Hawkeye-season-only grill or smoker, dusting off the black-gold stripe overalls, giving away old stuff so you can completely replenish, paint/re-paint the vehicle black and gold, etc.)

2) What special preparation(s) do you make on game-day (same stipulations as above, whether you attend Kinnick or watch elsewhere) that can't be done, or you choose to wait until game-day? (Examples: 20 jumping jacks repeating "Hayden ruled" or "JVB", tying shoes a certain way, making special recipes. NOT a example: buying ice for the cooler)

3) How do you deal with a Saturday-morning hangover brought on by over-eager anticipation from Friday night? (Examples: jog around the block, inhale coffee, make a nice breakfast. NOT an example: make yourself hurl)

For me:
1) Living in Florida, the Hawkeye sweaters are in the space bags from April until (usually) October. But, I get them out and run them in the "freshen up" cycle of the dryer.

I also inventory materials on hand for Orlando Iowa Hawkeye Club game watches, buy yellow laces for the black Converse high tops, review recipe books, watch as much DVR material relating to the Hawks as possible, and start scanning the on-screen guide to see when BTN is doing Iowa preview. I used to look for when Friday Night Tailgate would be in Iowa City, as well as the Saturday tailgate shows. It appears the BTN finally did the mercy-killing maneuver on Friday Night Tailgate as we knew it.

2) Each and every Saturday the Hawks play begins with watching any Hawk-related DVR material. Phone, with fight song ringtone, is checked for appropriately high volume. Decision on game-day outfit isn't really an issue in Florida until October/November, so it's a matter of whether or not I want black Hawk polo short (with logo/emblem) or black/yellow/white striped polo (no emblem), and whether I wear gold or black hat for game.

Reading the local paper for remote chance of finding Hawk news is rare, though not impossible. BTN Saturday morning shows are either watched live or DVR'ed, depending on time of game.

Never--I repeat, NEVER--do I put the Iowa flag on the truck window before game day. The theft of my Hawk car magnet last year (one of very few justifiable death-penalty crimes, BTW) necessitates this.

3) Pretty simple, for me. I don't drink much, if at all, on Friday nights. I save it for the game!

Put in time-off requests from work. Specifically the Nebraska game and Champ game, just in case.

I work 8p-4a also so I'm likely going to miss a couple games live. I'll DVR them, but it's not the same.

I always wear my "In Heaven There Is No Beer" t-shirt. I wore it for every game in 2009, and I refuse to wear any other shirt to or during a game again.

I am going to the Michigan State game so I will need to dress appropriately. Black hoodie, throwback jersey, black stocking cap, black gloves and I'll be set for black out gameday.

Game day at home; I make sure all my Hawkeye gear is ready on Friday. On gameday, all the cooking is done early to minimize interuptions. No calls or visitors unless its Hawkeye related. After I get dressed, its the dog's turn. She gets her jersey on and we are ready. Hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, chips and beer etc. Nothing extravagant. No elaborate prep, just the standard well tested menu items.

Thanks for picking me up on this! I have really been slacking on my duties...:(

Speaking for my group, this year is going to be a giant unknown in terms of preparations. Our group recently bought an RV (95 Tioga, in good condition and low mileage) and we have been in the process of totally cleaning the thing top to bottom and getting it ready for the games. It's been a long journey just because none of us knew anything about an RV and the instruction books for all the stuff wasn't as clear as one would hope. I have been heading back to Mtown the last four or five weekends to work on it. We finally figured out how to use all the appliances and what not and got the thing to how we want it.

As for a gameday activity or preparation, I guess I don't have one specific thing except for making sure I have my bibs and my hawkeye straw hat.

For combating the Saturday morning hangover, there really is only one solution, start drinking!
