3 PT FG

Although we are 3rd in the conference in 3 point FG % defense at .283 and shoot it at 4th best in the conference at 37.1%....

Our opponents this season have outscored us 303-264. It's quite the stat considering we are 2nd in the conference in scoring margin at over 20 points a game.

After watching last night and Wisconsin having at least 4 threats on the floor at a given time to hit from deep.... it made me realize just how bad we are in comparison to other teams who can use the 3 to their advantage so I thought I'd look at some stats.

Below are the links where I found the stats.

Actually one of Iowa's biggest improvement over last year is the 3 point shooting. They are up to 37% compared to last year 30.5%. Iowa has 3 point threats all over the court, as many as 4 in at once, but they are not shooting it any where near as much as they did last year.

But how have we shot the three in our games vs. legitimate opponents. Doesn't seem like we have shot well to me, I know vs. ISU we were 4-17. I think our stats are a little skewd as we've padded them vs. some bad teams. How we shoot the 3 vs. good teams will be one of the biggest factors on how far we go this year.

Agreed... the perecentage is fine. We just need to shoot it more but make sure that if we do the percent doesn't drop.

Don't agree that we have 3 point threats all over the court.

In conference play:
Ogelsby - 0-1
Gesell - 0-4
Uthoff - 0-0
McCabe - 0-2
White - 1-3
Clemmons - 0-0

As much as people have gotten on Dev for his 3 point shooting... he's the only one hitting. He's 4-6.

But in B1G games, granted it's only two, Iowa is 9th in the conference at 31%. About same as last year.:(

Also, Iowa is last in 3 ptrs made with only 5.

Why isnt Josh getting any shots ? I would think they would be wanting to put some threes up.

In my opinion he's too slow to get open coming off the screens and once he has the ball the defender is in his grill because he is no threat to drive and score.

Defenses are all over him. I guess they figure if they just sit on him, he'll be completely nullified.

I don't take a lot of stock into our current stats because of the slew of BAD teams we played in the pre-season. The only thing the stats tell me is that we have made improvement since the start of Fran being here. We have beat BAD, make that HORRID teams like we should.

However, the difference between how good Iowa is and the current outstanding stats is likely skewed. We are not as good as the stats look. It will all balance out as we continue to play better competition.

In regards to this thread specific to the 3 point shooting, which stat do you think is skewed?

Do you think our 3 point shooting percentage will go down or do you think our defensive FG % will go up or both?

Either way, it will still make my point, we get killed in terms of 3 PFG made and it will probably only get worse as conference play continues.

Some teams just shoot a bunch of threes. if they put up 32 or 33 of them in one game and make 10, that's 30 points, but a bad percentage.

Villanova took more threes than they did twos against Iowa.

Maybe Iowa should start putting up about 30 of them per game?

I think both will go down.....especially away from Carver against the boys boys. I'm most concerned about opponent 3 point percentage as I don't think we are a good half court defensive team because we are slow to close out on the perimeter and soft in the middle on help defense.

I think the same goes for many teams. Obviously Iowa has played a lot of really horrible teams and that helps the stat line.

Thats why the only really meaningful statistics are in conference play. And right now Iowa doesn't have a lot of data to go off of. But so far 3pt shooting in conference play hasn't been good.

If we can shoot them at 37%... then yes I want more 3 PT attempts.

And all 4 came from 1 player. In comparison, Wisconsin had 5 guys.

True, but almost everyone on the team is capable of knocking down the 3 pointer. Like I said Iowa has as many as 4 on the court at once. I admit Wisconsin having a center capable of knocking down the 3 is a huge advantage. Maybe someday Iowa will have that if Kyle Meyer ever develops into a decent player as he can hit the outside shot.

We would never have 4 3 point threats on the court at once.
