3-2 Zone

I think Iowa would be better suited going forward playing a 3-2 zone especially against guard oriented teams like Michigan. You would have Sapp playing at the top of the key, Gesell & Marble at the elbows, and White & Woody down low. I believe teams would have a hard time getting to the lane with Sapp at the top. This would force teams to drive closer to the baseline which would cut down on passing lanes. When teams do get into the lane you have White and Woody for help defense down low.

There were a few times we ran it against ISU and it seemed to work. I believe it works better than the 2-3 which runs a higher risk of leaving someone wide open for 3.

Iowa runs a 2-3 zone and a 1-2-2 match up zone in the half court.

A 3-2 zone would force woodbury to step too far from the basket.

Zone defense is for sissies. It means you really can't play defense. Help out zone some is ok. Otherwise hurts offense, does not play well for a team that uses a bunch of players and all around is not the defense of champions. You are covering up glaring weaknesses. A good team will usually dismantle you.

A 3-2 zone and 1-2-2 are the same defenses. Clemens plays the top or middle of the 3 and woody and white play the bottom Great defense if you have length like Iowa does. Great to contain penetration but have to communicate to cover 3s.

OleDustyButt is right. the only difference is the wings in the 1-2-2 aren't extended as far.

The key the top/middle he initiates or dictates the defense. He has the most responsibility and coverage. Clemens will be great when you have the length of marble, white and woody. Should be a d Iowa uses a lot this year. I agree with Frantheman zone doesn't have to be weak if it is your strength ie.. Cuse and Baylor

A smothering zone turns even the most efficient guards sideways.

122 and 32 are similar but it is a common misconception that they are the same.

122 allows guards to stay around the perimeter and posts to stay in the post. Even when the ball is in the corner because of the rotation of the players. In a 32 when the ball goes to the corner the post rotates to the corner and the point man (usually your pg) must rotate into the post. This sets up a major disadvantage. Though the 2 defenses seem to look the same it is all about the rotation of the players and it is different in the 2.

122 matchup is called this because it is supposed to give the illusion of a switching man defense. This is to keep players in their optimum defensive spots (ie a pg at the top of the defense). But a 32 has different rotaions to cover all the zones where guards have to rotate to the low post.
