25 years later, Iowa upset is still UCR’s most memorable moment

If that game is played 10 times on a neutral court, Iowa wins 9 of them. Unfortunately, that 1/10 chance hit Iowa square in the face that night. I remember listening to that game on the radio and could not believe hearing how UCR was hitting 3 after 3. A lucky bunch that night.

Excellent find, I will never forget that victory by the Highlanders, although I remember with more rage and disappointment the loss to UNLV at the Kingdome in Seattle.....

I can't believe I don't even remember that loss. Although even if I get senile and don't remember my own family I'll never forget that UNLV loss. I remember watching it in my basement, total domination the first half..then the loss. When they beat us this UNLV guy dancing around kicking his legs up in the air. Sometimes I lay awake at night hoping that that guy is not doing well. Not wishing cancer or anything but maybe him being behind on his credit card payment..perhaps a bad rash. I don't like UNLV.

Games like that should be a fireable offense.

Yep, against a team that shoots pretty much exclusively 3's, why you wouldn't be out in their faces all game long and forcing them to beat you in some other way, is a mystery to me.

I remember this game. Exhibit A as to what can happen when you don't guard the 3, no matter your opponent. 21 threes? Turn those into wide open layups, and you take 21 points away from UCR and Iowa wins the game. GUARD THE THREE!

This game reminded me of Loyola Marymount vs. Michigan in the 1990 NCAA Tournament...

If I remember correctly, Mr. Davis's teams always had trouble with teams that shot a lot of threes. That is how UNLV beat them despite the Hawks 16 point halftime lead......

Oh yes, I remember this game. This is where I started wondering about the Tom Davis press and the Tom Davis 2-3 zone - neither were doing a thing that game. Whether Iowa was just passive or tired was hard to say, but neither was active in any shape, matter or form. And by the way, at every key moment where we looked like we could make a comeback, Roy Marble was ready to supply a missed front-end of a one-and-one. Can't single him out though - everybody played bad. But it was because of that game that we were able to beat North Carolina.

This was the game where I gave up on Mr. Davis. UCR's center was 6-7 and I believe he stepped back and hit a 25' 3-point shot to start the game. They ran us off the court and the final score was closer that it actually was. This game showed off all the weaknesses in the Tom Davis system. They hit a truck load of threes and we never covered them once.

I forgot about that loss because of how successful that team ended up. The UCR loss served as a wake up call while the loss that really stings is the one that ended their season.

21-36 from 3 point range? I must have been so apoplectic during that game, I blacked out. That's probably why I don't remember it.

What is it with teams that just go off from 3 point range when they play Iowa? The aforementioned UNLV game was the quintessential melt down of the Tom Davis era.
