2020 could be fugly

Especially in the trenches:

O-Line loss: Wirfs, probably Jackson

D-Line loss: Epenesa, Lattimore, Reif, Golston?

QB: Stanley--not worried so much here

DB: Ojemudia

Andy possible breakout stars: Geno Stone

Because we won't be able to recruit anyone. We'll lose all these players to graduation and not replace ANY of them!

Whether we do or don’t Kirk is going to be paid a diarrhea load—that’s what matters. And go Fran! No sweet 16s in ten years.

The salary complaints are getting old. Do you think Illinois is happy spending $300,000 more on Lovie Smith (4 Big 10 wins, 9 wins overall and no bowl appearances) than Iowa is spending on Kirk? Kirk is the sixth-highest paid coach in the conference.

I love how we just assume every player will be gone as a junior. If they go early it usually means they were pretty darn good (production) at this level.

He used to clearly be overpaid, but he's pretty much getting paid appropriately at this point based on where we typically finish (6th-ish).

So what do you suggest? Are you saying fans should bitch more on message boards? How can fans demand more, to the point where it actually makes a difference? Are you suggesting fans quit going to games? If so, you are suggesting fans quit enjoying something for a few years in a desperate attempt to HOPEFULLY get better in future years. That's a lot to give up on a gamble that will only maybe work out. What should someone like me do who rarely goes to games anyway? How can I demand success to the point where changes are made and we start winning more games? What happens if in a few years from now it actually works and we start winning more games? How long do we get to enjoy that new success befkre we have to start demanding even more success because we're bored with the next level we finally recently achieved?

Some day it will hit them, it mostly matters what the big donors want. Just like politics my friends.

I think people really underestimate the depth and talent we're stockpiling on the OL. Kallenberger, Jenkins, Linderbaum, Miller, Endres, Britt, Plumb, Fenske, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some, plus whoever we add in the '20 class. Not to mention even Kirk's "bad" lines are still average by most standards.

Also, turnover is a huge part of CFB. Worrying about departures every season is both tiresome and only looking at the negatives.

Worry about 2019 turnover, 2020 is a helluva long ways away. My guess is 3-4 guys will emerge this year that will make you excited about 2020. AJE is really the only person you mentioned who isn’t replaceable. He’s a generational talent, kinda like gustafson

I am actually more concerned about whether Kirk is tired enough of getting schooled by Wisconsin to do something about it.

If as he says, we are equal programs, you kind of need to beat them once every 5-7 years or so.

Need to rip them in madtown this fall. Needs to be job #1.

I actually think 2020 looks great on paper. Losing AJE is going to hurt a ton but that’s pretty unavoidable. I’ll assume we lose A Jackson early and AJE.

QB - Mansell / Petras
RB - Sargent / Young / Goodson
WR - ISM / B Smith / Tracy
TE - Beyer / Miamen / LaPorta
LT: Kallenberger / Miller
LG: Britt / Miller
C: Linderbaum
RG: Barnwart
RT: Wirfs

DE: Golston, ZVV
DT: Nixon, Jalen Hunt
DT: Shannon, ZVV
DE: Waggoner, Lee

LB: Colbert, Jacobs
LB: Niemann, Doyle

Star/Cash: DJ Johnson

CB: Hankins
CB: Brents
S: Stone
S: Merriweather

3 year starters (Sargent/Young, ISM, Smith, Barnwart, Wirfs, Colbert, Niemann, Hankins, Stone)

2 year starters or plenty of experience (Beyer, Linderbaum, Kallenberger (G this year), Golston, Nixon, Brents, DJ Johnson)

That is a ton of experience to return. QB play and replacing pass rush will be the biggest question marks, and yes losing Golston and Wirfs is entirely possible, but you’d still have a ton of experience there.

Regardless of who returns and who leaves, 2020 was going to be a tough year because of the schedule:

Road - Minn, OSU, PSU, Illinois Purdue
Home - ISU, MSU, Wisky, NW, Nebby, UNI, NIU
