2017 Starting DE's

I know we haven't even opened the 2016 season, but here's a question for 2017. In 2017 we will have two junior defensive ends each with two years starting experience. But...we bring in five star, number one defensive end recruit in the country. Do you put a two year starter behind an incoming freshman? If you don't start Epy as a freshman, then he's starting over a three year returning senior starter when you do it as a soph. Do you move Nelson in to a tackle (he's already 280 lbs plus, but prob too tall for a tackle)? Tough call for the captain to tell a player like Hesse that was fed to the wolves as a freshman, he's now second team after starting two years, or three. What say you?

I've wondered myself if they'll think about moving M. Nelson inside, not necessarily to make room for Eppy, but because of lack of depth and experience inside. I don't think it would be unprecedented. For example, Christian Ballard was quite successful doing it. It will probably depend on how some of the youngsters are developing and whether someone that tall can play with enough 'leverage' inside. I don't see Eppy 'transplanting ' anyone right off the bat, but he could work his way onto the depth chart rather quickly. I'm sure his dad has him 'grounded' in what to expect and how much bigger and faster things are at this level, so I don't see him freaking out if he's not playing or even redshirted his 1st year. It will be fun to watch how progresses that's for sure!!!

If we are having to redshirt 5-stars with our lack of depth something is terribly wrong with our defensive player development. If he's not on the 2 deep next year I'll eat my hat.

Good 'problem' to have. The best way to do it to me would be to split up the reps keep em healthy. And say whichever ones are better at pass rushing have them in there for the obvious passing downs and stuff like that. It doesn't have to be a one guys a starter and has to play 80 percent of the snaps kind of deal. Having them split them closer to 50-50 or 60-40 would keep everyone fresher late in games. But again that's assuming Eppy will be good enough early on. He seems like he's an athletic freak and very well may be. I hope he doesn't have eligibility wasted on the bench that's all I know.

What he said I agree. It adds fresh legs, aids experience and builds depth.

I agree, I would be shocked if he won't be able to at least add depth to the DE group next fall and earn some playing time. He is big enough to play already and he has yet to play his Sr. year. If he can't get playing time, that means that a lot of the Tr Fr. this year on the line are really impressing.

Another poster at another site listed the top DE over like the last 10 years, and nearly all of them played as a Tr Fr, and it was for powerhouse teams typically. So like I said, I figure he will earn some playing time.

I missed that post, fill me in?

Every #1 Rivals ranked Strong side DE from '07 - '15 didn't red shirt for their teams. Here is a list of the teams that both got and played that player as a Tr Fr:

USC, Clemson, Texas, Texas, S. Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama, & Auburn

I highly, highly doubt that AJ redshirts.

I didn't say he wouldn't make the depth chart, BUT, I would make a small wager that all those teams 'promised' kids playing time to go to their school. I really doubt Iowa did. We'll see....I hope he IS the real deal and can help us right out of the box!!!

If the last 10 years or so is our guide, he will be the real deal and help us right out of the box.

Lets say we land Van Ginkle too...sorry for the spelling. Both Hesse and Nelson may be looking for work. I say you have those four on 3rd down though rushing the passer.

Really? Where are they going to look for work? Lol.... Tell me the last time a 2 yr. junior or senior starter has been supplanted by a freshman or a JC player? You people are seriously hilarious....A bunch of you are 'always' talking about some new kid is the second coming and is going to blah, blah, blah.......Lol....You folks are entertaining, I'll give you that much............I'll try to contact AJ's dad and see what HE thinks. I can almost bet you, he's already told his kid that he probably won't see much action his true freshman year unless there's injuries....

As others have mentioned maybe one or both may eventually move inside. Karl Klug played on the inside at 270lbs. Ballard got to 300 lbs by the '10 season before that he was playing end at 280 lbs. I have no clue if Nelson/Hesse's frame can put on more weight.

And yeah Icke, before you come at me I know playing d-line, especially on the inside, it has a lot to do with leverage and technique.

I'm pretty sure, at Iowa, didn't Moaki and Bulaga do similar things. Desmond King beat out Lomax at the corner position. Didn't James Daniels supplant or work in at guard last year against older players, even before the injuries. Do you want me to go on? I'm not saying Nelson and Hesse aren't going to be playing...I'm just saying the two DE's coming in (if we get Van Ginkle) are special and have shown special skills at the two levels they have played at. Van Ginkle was playing in a pretty good league...above JC, and demonstrated special skills and speed. He will be bigger and stronger by the time he gets to Iowa...if he comes.

Icke, there's humor in them there words (looking for work) , don't take everything so literally. If you think a guy rated as the number two or three DE in high school isn't going to come to Iowa and play alot, well, you are nuts. Hell, with Hesse and Nelson this year, they are talking about Gholston, Simon, or someone else playing. AJ is 260 now with speed. He will be 265 or 270 is my guess when he gets here. He plays...and plays alot. Nelson at 280 now, is going to move inside next year...that's where we will need him too. He can add another ten pounds in a year. He will clog a passing lane that's for sure with his size.

Lomax was hurt. If Iowa 'has' to play a freshman, it's not a good thing and it's only because a position was decimated by injuries or attrition. That's they way it is whether you believe it or like it. What 2 year starter did Daniels supplant? None of what you are bringing up has anything to do with what I said, so your argument is pretty much moot. Have somebody explain to you what I said and then get back to me. And when did I say he wouldn't have a chance to make the depth chart (and MAYBE have a chance to play)? Van Ginkel is coming to Iowa!!! LOL Do you know something we don't? I don't think you know much of anything, and apparently aren't strong in reading comprehension. Hesse and Nelson have shown 'skills' at a MUCH higher level (Big10) than the HS level, lol....I assure you that if Matt Nelson went down to AJ's high school, he would beat him out of his job, lol. AJ's great HS player and has the 'potential' to be a great college player, but ther is a 'big' jump between HS and Big10 football, so I'm just saying that everyone should just slow down a little on annointing him the starter or even getting to play that much. I hope he 'does' come here and teat it up right away and give us great depth and a solid rotation, but even if he doesn't, we are in pretty good shape at DE, trust me....

I think Hesse could move inside in the future.....I could see him being a " Mitch King" type player.
Hesse will NOT being moving inside, and I knew Mitch King, and Hesse is nothing like Mitch King. Where do you folks come up with some of these ideas? Hesse did an amazing job filling in for Ott last year (made the game changing play against Nebby) and is bigger, stronger and 'experienced' and will do an even bettdr job this year, but some of you have 'moved him inside' or already annointed AJ as the starter over him, lol...amazing!!! P.S.- The Shulte kid that's coming in is a 'Mitch King' type player and they will be playing him at DT....

Lighten up Frances...... We are fans not coaches. King played on the inside at 264 lbs. Given what Iowa has and what is coming in there is no harm in speculating a guy or 2 moving inside. Get over yourself for like 5 minutes would you please.

Not much to worry about here. The top 4 guys will start regardless of position. And anybody on the 2 line will play if they show the coaches they can get the job done. Especially if they can rush the QB, Parker will find a spot for them in the 3rd down defense.

Matt Roth started exactly one game his SO year in 2002 and still led the B1G in sacks during conference play. Good players will get time.
