2016 depth chart

If I'm not mistaken, Davis was taken aback by the lack of skilled receivers when he took over as OC. Looks like they've been trying to rectify that shortcoming ever since. We'll see next season how far they've come (or not).

These receivers that you mock help lead Iowa to being 3rd in the big 10 in passing efficiency. That has improved 8 spots since 2009 when they were 10th out of 11 teams. These receivers are talented. I can't count the number of key first downs that Matt Vandeberg got the team this year, and often times on 3rd down plays. Smith and Smith also took the lid off defenses with their speed! In 2016 Iowa has a number of up incoming wide outs that will continue the superb play at receiver and help lead this team to many victories!

More athletic and smarter. Smaller and much less experienced and accomplished.

And the building block of an offensive line is THE center position. I am not panicking. I just think our current offensive line depth is an illustration of the poor recruiting since the 2010 Orange Bowl for instance. The disparity in talent between then and now is stark IMO.

Clayborn/Binns vs. Hesse/Nelson?
DJK/McNutt vs. Vandenberg/McCarron?
Spievey/Sash/Hyde vs King and...?

You want to compare OLines?
Bulaga/Vandervelde/Gettis/Eubanks/Calloway/D. Richardson/Doering/Zusevics/Reiff (in position switch and development) vs. Now??

I don't believe any of these 9 listed above were walkons.

My point is Oline recruiting has gone through some dark years. Why? I believe we are about to see an uptick in recruiting though. I hope so. But we didn't see it after our Orange Bowl victory. I find that interesting.

I actually really like the O-line recruits we got last year, all of whom save daniels redshirted. I think our o-line the next 2 years to be very special.. all 5 starters coming back started multiple games/saw extensive playing time, and only croston next year is a senior. these guys will be together for the next 2 years virtually intact. once again, so long as Kirk is here, i will never be seriously concerned about the o-line play. poor line play has been a rarity the last 10 years. i don't get the doubters about o-line play considering the track record iowa has under ferentz at that position.

the area of concern i have after next year is depth on the DT position. i have no idea about any of the freshmen who redshirted/who's coming in behind bazata and johnson. that's a very upper-classman heavy position. we're fine for next year, but who's coming in 2017 and beyond?

Iowa will have loads of talent on the defensive line in 2017. First off Iowa will be most loaded at defensive end with AJ Epenea, Parker Hesse, Matt Nelson, Anthony Nelson, Brady Reiff, Brandon Simon, Chauncey Golston, Romeo McKnicht. So In addition to senior Nathan Bazata Iowa is going to have the big freshman Juan Harris, in addition Jacob Newborg, Garret Jensen and Jacob Giese are going to be sophomores. I also anticipate a few players now listed at DE are going to be DTs. These include Mike Slater, Cedrick Lattimore and Austin Schulte. They are recruiting well for the defensive line I am not at all worried.

Laugh all you want Dean. So he is automatically good because he has two brothers who were?

He has admitted he is the least talented of the three but by all accounts from the family he IS the smartest and sounds like a great kid.

Of our top 9 lineman on the 2016 depth chart, (Myers is listed at two positions), 7 earned all'state honors in high school. The 8th, Cole Croston, earned all-conference. Guess who didn't even earn all-conference?

He is a senior who has never lettered. Has he even taken a snap as a center in a game? If the season were to start tomorrow he would apparently be our starting center. And this doesn't concern you?

I would say our line was exposed in our last 3 games as being overrated. We have 4 former walk-ons out of our top 9 lineman heading into next year.

Recruiting and Development, Talent and Depth ARE big issues IMO. And the depth chart is evidence. Blame GD for using those Schollies on WRs if you want, (and that hasn't panned out yet), but the buck stops with BF and KF.

So true. And BF and KF will take the "heat" for an "abysmal" 12-2 season all day, every day, year in and year out. You may be forgetting that we have 5 players starting on the line with starting experience, several at more than one position along the line.

Blink twice if you are Hawknick...

I think the Paulsen twins will see some PT this year and be nice cornerstones the next couple of years.
