2011 Depth Chart

I would say that one of the WRs already on campus plays over Hillyer. I also think (contrary to what KF said) Coe plays defense, he has this season to redshirt and figure out that is his best place. Coe is the best LEO on the team after Nielsen. McCall and Canzeri will be the #3 RBs this year. I also see Cooper being on the 2 deep since he was told he had a chance to play right away.

If nothing else, we could probably move Morris to LEO and plug Bruce Davis in at MIKE. Morris is probably the next best coverage guy out of our linebackers.

tm3308 -

I don't know about that. Morris already has more starting experience and more game experience alligning the D and all that. That experience is HUGE!

If Bruce proves to the coaches that they can't leave him off the field ... then he'll see the field. Furthermore, if Bruce fully rehabs ... then it will be important for him to be ready to be a starter. As we've learned ... a starter can get injured at ANY time.

At this juncture, I still don't know who might be the best fit at LEO if Nielsen isn't good to go. As 1Ksm has stated before ... spring camp can't get here fast enough. I want to find out how we're looking at LB (among other spots).

I do believe that we could see some FR putting themselves into the LB-picture. Poggi could enter the picture at the LEO spot. Alston could enter the picture at the LEO spot. Who knows? Heck, when AJ Edds hit campus ... I had him pegged more as a MIKE if he didn't stick at TE ... boy am I happy I was wrong. Thus, maybe Spears ends up being a surprise at the LEO spot. Heck, maybe Krieger-Coble ends up being "the surprise" at the LEO spot. We'll see ... eventually.

Now that we have our recruiting class inked and for the most part know who will be with the team come next fall, the only logical thing to do next is predict our lineup for next year. Here is my stab at it:

QB- Vandenburg, Weinke
RB- Coker, Johnson/Coe
FB-Rogers
WR- McNutt, Martin-Manley
WR- Davis, Hillyer
TE- Herman, Fiedorowicz
LT- Reiff, Orne
LG- McMillian, Van Sloten
C- Ferentz, Bofelli
RG- Gettis, Scherff
RT- Zusevics, Donnal

DE- Binns, Daniel
DT- Daniels, Davis
DT- Bigach, Cooper
DE- Alvis, Raymon
LB- Nielsen, DiBona
LB- Morris, Davis
LB- Kirksey, Poggi
CB- Prater, Castillo
CB- Hyde, Campbell
FS- Miller, Nielsen
SS- Bernstine, Law

I have to say, I think you are a little off and discounting who we currently have on campus. You have 5 true freshman on the 2 deep going into spring practice. Do you know how many true freshman were on the two deep last year at the end of the year? Coker, Lowery, Miller, and Morris. Morris and Coker strictly because of injuries to the guys ahead of them.
There is a chance one of the WRs plays early as we do not have much depth, but you left off Jordan Cotton, Shumpert, and possibly Staggs.
The other issue I have is at CB and S. CB especially, you have Campbell over Lowery and Lowe. If anything I see Castillo starting to slide back and Campbell will really have to be good to break the two deeps early at CB. At safety you are missing Hitchens (Don't know if he will stay there or not), Swanson (On 2 deeps this year often) and Donatell (He may move to WR too). I see Nico as a freshman who is likely to see the field, but it will be on special teams to begin with and maybe work his way into the 2 deeps.
On the d-line, I think you are wrong about Daniel and Alvis, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt since you have them both on there. I think you are going to see Nardo, Trinca-Pasat, Forgy, Gaglione, and Hardy at DE before Raymon.
I do think you are right about Cooper, he has a very good chance of breaking the 2 deeps early and getting meaningful snaps in a rotation. But barring any unforeseen injuries at certain positions (Like last year at LB and RB) it is not likely you see multiple true freshman on the 2 deeps. You will definately see them on special teams like last year (Morris, CJ, Lowery, Shumpert, Hitchens, Meyers, etc).

I agree that Morris' game experience is invaluable. Which is why I'd consider it a last resort to move him. But he is one of our top 2 most athletic/best coverage backers, so he would be the next best-equipped to handle the duties at LEO. Whether or not that ability outweighs the dropoff in game experience by going to Davis at MIKE, I don't know for sure, and we won't get any idea until spring.

The OP got screwed.

None of the replies included who would be in the 2-deeps.

Every single respondent thought this was the "which non-starter will get playing time next year" thread. That's great, but which of these players "getting playing time" next year will be in the 2 deeps??? Nobody is gonna answer the original poster's question? Really?

Here's my stab at the 2011 depth chart:

Offense:

LT - Reiff, MacMillan/Van Sloten
LG - Gettis, Boffeli/Orne
C - Ferentz, Boffeli
RG - MacMillan, Scherff/Orne
RT - Zusevics, Van Sloten
TE - Herman/Fiedorowicz, Zach Derby (I bet that Hamilton will see early action as a TR FR though)
WR - McNutt, Martin-Manley
WR - Davis, Shumpert/Grant (My bet is that Grant's willingness to block is what earns him early action)
FB - Rogers (if healthy), Gimm
RB - Coker, McCall/Coe/Johnson
QB - Vandenberg, Wienke/Derby

Defense:

DE: Binns, Alvis
DE: Daniel, Forgy (Johnson could/would have a shot ... depending on academics)
DT: Bigach, C Davis (I'm more than a little curious about Trinca-Pasat though)
DT: Daniels, Nardo/Cooper
MIKE: Morris, B Davis
WILL: DiBona/Kirksey (Spears could potentially surprise us and make a push at the WILL spot)
LEO: Nielsen, Getz/Poggi/Alston (Alston has serious potential)
SS: Bernstine/Hitchens, Donatell/Law
FS: Miller, Nielsen
CB: Prater, Lowery
CB: Hyde, Castillo/Campbell

I'm looking forward to see the progress Carl Davis will make, he's a large human being.

You don't think Andrew Donnal makes the two-deep on the o-line? If Greg Castillo see significant minutes at cornerback next year we're in big trouble.

If Iowa has a combined 8 true & red-shirt freshmen in the two-deep, its likely to be a long year.
I'd bet it won't even be HALF that number.

Imagine having two true DT's out there with Davis and Cooper? I'd be interested to see what kind of impact that has on the defense's overall performance in a couple years.

Offense:

LT - Reiff, Van Sloten
LG - Gettis, Orne/Heier
C - Ferentz, Boffeli
RG - MacMillan, Scherff/Heier
RT - Zusevics, Van Sloten/MacMillan
TE - Herman/Fiedorowicz, Zach Derby (I see one of the TR FR TE playing Specials)
WR - McNutt, Martin-Manley (where M-M and maybe a Return man is the #3 overall playing in the slot)
WR - Davis, Schumpert (Grant will be on Specials, maybe returning)
FB - Rogers, Gimm
RB - Coker, Johnson/McCall (Coe redshirts, this can be pulled at anytime, because they want him to get time practicing RB but see if LB might be better)
QB - Vandenberg, Wienke (Derby I see changing positions but not sure if it happens now or another year, mainly because of Rudock)

Defense:

DE: Binns, Alvis/Trinca-Pasat (From video I see T-P as a solid DE)
DE: Daniel, Forgy/Alvis
DT: Bigach, C Davis/Cooper (one of these young guns ends up taking Bigach place)
DT: Daniels, Davis/Cooper
MIKE: Morris, DiBona
WILL: B Davis, Kirksey/Poggi (Iowa trys to get their best players on the field and Davis is their 3rd best LB so Will is where I see him, Kirksey I can see at LEO also)
LEO: Nielsen, Getz/Poggi/Kirksey (Alston probably redshirts but if he is as talented as he seems he will play Specials and probably start as a Sophomore)
SS: Hitchens, Bernstine/Donatell (Maybe Law works his way into this but I think Hitchens is the top guy for the spot with Bernstine coming in as the NB)
FS: Miller, Nielsen
CB: Prater, Lowery
CB: Hyde, Castillo/Campbell (Bernstine could see time at CB if injuries happen)

I see 5 or 6 TR FR playing this year (all on Specials) and only McCall and Cooper on the 2 deep with others having the possibility to work into it.

-I hope Heiar is in the two deeps next year. It seems like a waste to bring in a JC o-lineman and they don't see the field.

-As always we need guys to step up and become the players we hoped they would be. Keenan Davis, K-Mart, Jordan Cotton, Steve Bigach, Carl Davis, Lebron Daniel, Jordan Bernstein, Johnny Mullings, James Vandenberg, CJF, and DeAndre Johnson to name a few.

-Our coaching staff needs to step it up this year too. There were too many coaching blunders last year.

You don't think Andrew Donnal makes the two-deep on the o-line? If Greg Castillo see significant minutes at cornerback next year we're in big trouble.

Donnal is a high ceiling guy ... however, I have yet to hear too much about him yet. We'll see what sort of buzz he EARNS through the camps and what-not. Until he earns legit buzz, I'm not going to heap undue expectation on him just because of recruiting hype.

As for Greg Castillo, I don't think that Iowa would be quite as "in trouble" as you suggest. The last I checked, Bradley Fletcher is a starter in the NFL at CB. The last I checked, Fletcher looke EVEN WORSE than Castillo did at a comparable time in his collegiate career. In other words, I'd cut Castillo a break. The young man still can develop and improve plenty. Fans and/or teammates should not count-out their Hawk family-members.

-I hope Heiar is in the two deeps next year. It seems like a waste to bring in a JC o-lineman and they don't see the field.

It would be nice ... however, he's still a guy who will have 3 years to play 2.

You have to remember that there's a decent possibility that we lose Reiff after the 2011 season .... yet another Iowa LT likely going in the 1st round.

The implication there being that we're going to have to replace THREE really high quality guys as we enter the 2012 season (Reiff, Zusevics, and Gettis). Thus, that's REALLY where our need for Heiar comes into play.
