2006-07 Iowa vs 2011-12 Iowa

In honor of us clinching a .500 season (barring a loss in one of the second right tournaments first rounds.) I am creating a nearly meaning less discussion basked around who wins if the 2006-07 Iowa team plays this years.

I pick the 2006-07 team but I think I like this one more.

Agreed on both counts. I like this team more, but the 06-07 team was better. I like this one more because we return a big chunk of the roster for at least 2 more years, so the potential is there. The old team had Haluska, Smith, Henderson, and Freeman; that's four guys we would have trouble matching up with. But none of them were around after another year.

I am thinking perhaps next year, the NCAA may not be in our fortune cookie, however. I think we're putting too much on the incoming freshmen and underestimating the loss of Gatens. I think they will be excellent players, eventually, as will Oglesby. But there will be freshman growing pains, and I don't think Josh is anywhere near ready to fill the shoes Gatens is leaving behind. I'm starting to expect something more along the lines of Horner/Brunner's freshman or sophomore years for next season. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'm just a little leery of betting so much on unproven talent. I'm not sure they'll be consistent enough to get us dancing next year.

Every team in the conference is losing as much or more than Iowa will be, guys like Shurna, Green, Taylor, Hummel, Buford just to name a few. It would be bad if things were static, but they are not.

I am worried about losing Gatens too. I am unsure as to who is going to step up and be our go to player. I'm counting on Marble myself and I hope he's ready for that role. If we're going to make the tourny I think he needs to take that kind of a step.

Purdue is headed downhill, I won't deny that one. No Hummel, LewJack, or Barlow next year? Bad news for the Boilers. But Michigan State and Ohio State will stay right where they are, and Michigan may get even better. Indiana will almost certainly improve if Zeller sticks around for another year. Wisconsin doesn't look to be anything special.

But there aren't many games I'd look at and call them locks. If we had Gatens coming back, I'd have a different tune. But I'm not ready to thrust the burden of winning 20+ and making the NCAA Tournament on 5 freshmen.

I like this years team and am happy with the improvements but if you let Fran coach that 06/07 team they would have been in the tournament. That was a pretty damn good team that Alford did not get much out of. With the way this years team plays defense at times Haluska would have had a career game and Tyler Smith would be a matchup problem. IMO this years team plays above their abilities while that 06/07 team played below their abilities.

I could not agree more with several comments about how many are underestimating the loss of Gatens. His work ethic, professionalism, maturity, overall lockerroom presence will all be missed as such is very, very important with a young team. On the court? Noway do we replace him next year with anybody currently on the roster nor a 2012 recruit. It's gonna take a year to see if anybody on the roster now or incoming recruits will live up to what Matt brings to the table night in and night out. Simply put, he will not be easily replaced.

Havent you heard? We should be expecting something like this:
